Cedric’s eyes lit up. “What kind of competition?”
Ella knew exactly how much Cedric loved gaming. “Let’s play a game. Just you and me. Winner takes all.”
Cedric looked at her like she was joking. “Seriously? Ella, you want to play against me? I’m basically a legend. You think some small-town girl can actually beat me?”
Ella just gave him a confident smile. “Only one way to find out.”
Cedric grabbed his phone. “Alright, let’s do this. Get ready to be amazed.”
Ella pulled out her phone too, and they jumped into a game.
In the middle of it, Cedric’s character started spinning through the air with a giant sword, showing off. “Ella, this is the end for you!”
But before he could even finish taunting, “GAME OVER” flashed across his screen.
It was done.
Cedric shot up out of his seat, totally stunned. While he’d been busy showing off, Ella’s character had swooped down from above, her axe glowing gold as she finished him off in one clean hit.
He lost.
He couldn’t believe it.
He was supposed to be the expert, the king of this game.
He stared at Ella, still in shock. “Wait… You actually beat me?”
Ella just gave a little smirk. “You lost, Mr. Grimm.”
She put her phone away, walked over to Fiona, and peeled the tape off her mouth. “Fiona, are you okay?”
Fiona brushed the dust off herself. “I’m fine, Ella.”
Ella didn’t flinch. She held his look, her own eyes calm and clear.
Cedric turned back to her, stunned. “Seriously, Ella? You called David? That’s cheating.”
Before he could say another word, David smacked him lightly on the head. “Who said you could come here and mess with people? Apologize to Ella. Now.”
“David, you want me to apologize to her? Come on, I—”
David raised his hand again, and Cedric immediately caved. He looked at Ella, sheepish. “Ella… I’m sorry.”
Ella stood tall, bringing Fiona up beside her. Her voice was calm and firm. “Mr. Grimm, listen up. First, I’m not clinging to David. He’s the one who can’t get the divorce settled. So if you really want to help, stop wasting your time on me and figure out how to get him to agree to it.”
Cedric glared, but Ella didn’t back down.
“Second,” she said, stepping even closer, “this will be the last time. If you ever drag my friends into your drama again, and David doesn’t do something about it, I will.”
