Cedric sucked in a sharp breath, his face turning pale. Was this country girl, the stand-in bride who married David, actually threatening him?
She wanted to teach him a lesson for David? Was he hearing this right?
Had the world flipped upside down? In all of Rockford Bay, the only person who’d ever dared put Cedric in his place was David himself.
Ella pulled Fiona close. “Come on, let’s go,” she said quietly.
The girls headed for the door, but before they could leave, David reached out and caught Ella’s hand.
His long fingers wrapped around her soft palm, and the spark between them was impossible to ignore. For a split second, they were both back at Briarwood Estate, reliving that night when he’d pressed her up against the wall.
Ella jerked her hand away.
David’s gaze lingered on her delicate features. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he spoke, his voice calm. “Ella, this won’t happen again.”
Ella looked him right in the eye. “Mr. Harmon, please sort things out with your grandmother as soon as possible. I’m ready to go to the courthouse for a divorce whenever you are. Honestly, I’ve been wanting to give the title of Mrs. Harmon back to Jessa for a while now.”
Without waiting for a response, she walked out with Fiona.
David watched her leave, his brows drawing together in a thoughtful frown.
Cedric wouldn’t let it go. “David, what is up with her? Who does she think she is?”
David shot him a warning look.
Cedric instantly clammed up, but mumbled under his breath, “David, we played a game earlier and she totally destroyed me.”
David looked surprised. “She beat you?”
He knew Cedric’s gaming skills. Usually, no one could touch him.
Cedric was still fuming. “No way am I letting this go. I’m going to challenge her again.”
He whipped out his phone and sent Ella a message through the game.
She was still online and, without hesitation, accepted his challenge.
They started another round.
This time, Cedric didn’t bother showing off. He charged at Ella with his oversized sword, shouting, “Take this!”
