Piper
The next day was much the same, except I sparred with Quirin instead of his pack members. I enjoy sparring with him because he’s a scrappy, hard fighter and I don’t have to hold back.
“You’re definitely getting better,” he says to me.
“And yet, you somehow still manage to hold your own,” I say, ducking as he swings his leg at my head and punching him in the inner thigh before he can get his leg back down. “I learned that one from your daughters,” I say, grinning.
“I have nearly twenty years of experience on you, Piper.
You may be younger, but I have more experience in real-world fighting.”
“Alpha Michael is the same. He’s retired from the Alpha Squad, and he can still take all five of us who are competing for squad positions at once. I can’t wait until I’m that good.”
“You’re getting there,” he says, before stepping back.
I’m pouring in sweat, sucking in air like there’s not enough oxygen left in the world for me to breathe, and as I bend over to try and catch my breath, I hear the pack begin clapping. When I look up, everyone has stopped sparring and is watching us.My eyes meet Henry’s and he’s clapping with a look on his face that is equal parts proud and possessive. It sends heat through me as I remember last night. He had that same look on his face while I was riding him.
He walks over to me, sliding his hand into my sweaty hair and pulling me into a dirty, possessive kiss. He doesn’t stop until I’m leaning against him, whimpering with desire.
After breakfast, I spend more time with Vivienne, making sure she knows that I’m thrilled that we’re sisters and promising her that I’ll let her know what’s going on with the investigation as long as she keeps me informed about what’s going on with her and bringing the rogues in.
Before we leave, I hug her tightly.
“I love you,” she whispers.
I hold her more tightly. It’s the first time she’s ever said it first.
“I love you, too. Please take care of yourself and if you need anything, and I mean anything at all..”
“I’ll call you. I promise. No more secrets.”
“No more secrets.”
On the way back to the Academy, I make sure that Henry is planning to stay another night. I hate that he has to leave me again, but I know we both have responsibilities that we can’t walk away from right now.”You feel happy,” he says, kissing my hand.
“! am.”
“Good. That was a good weekend.”
“It really was. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it all worked out.”
“Everything else will too,” he says, just as my phone rings.
I look at the caller ID and ignore the call from my father.
“Your dad again?” he asks.
“Yep.”
“I’d be happy to answer your phone for you,” he growls.
“I’m sure he’s not happy about me no longer being part of Grady’s pack.”
“Tough fucking shit. As your Alpha, I’d be happy to set him straight.”
| laugh. It feels so good to be part of Henry’s pack now, so good to-be part of something that is so positive. And I love knowing that he will always be there, protecting me and keeping me safe.
Tyrus begins purring loudly at my thoughts, making me laugh even harder.
When we get back to the Academy, I realize we have a couple of hours before our meeting. I’m already makingplans to skip dinner and spend those hours in bed, when we walk into the dormitories and the scents hit me.
I stop, putling Henry to a stop with me as I stare at my father and brother, leaning against the wall on the other side of the dormitory, obviously waiting for me.
“Piper, you didn’t answer my calls,” my father says.
Henry growls and steps in front of me.
“Alpha Glenn, I presume?”
“You are?” my father asks, with all the condescension that I’ve come to expect from him.
“Alpha Henry, Piper’s Alpha.”
My father narrows his eyes at Henry, but Grady steps forward.
“What is this about, Piper?”
