The Pack's Luna: The Pack Series Book 4 novel Chapter 50

Megan

Jealousy, there’s no other word for it. First Cyra, now Piper, have found mates who absolutely adore them. Both of them come from homes with crappy fathers, just like me. Maybe that means there’s hope for me.

Watching Alpha Henry possessively hold on to Piper, watching her use the mate bond to soothe him made me ache for that in my life. After years of suffering a father who told me I was worthless and would never amount to anything, I would love nothing more than to have a mate who made me feel loved and cherished for the woman I am.

Even knowing that I’m in the top five spots for a position on an elite fighting squad, what did my father say?

“Well, I guess we know which one of you WON’T be making a squad,” he’d said, implying that I could never become part of something so elite. It’s only made me push myself harder. That, and earning Alpha Michael’s nods of approval every day during sparring class keep me going.

They keep me motivated to succeed.

Alpha Michael told me to be a better woman. He told me to stop selling myself short and acting like the woman my father thinks I am. And that’s what I’m doing. I’m not arrogant enough to say I don’t care about getting Alpha Michael’s accolades. Every morsel of approval he gives me is like a balm to my soul. I want to be worthy of praisefrom a man like him, and I want to be worthy of a spot on one of these elite squads. For me, failure isn’t an option. If Ifail, I go home to my father and his smothering disappointment. I can’t do that. I won’t.

But more than any of that, I want a man to look at me the way Yorick looks at Cyra, or the way Alpha Henry looks at Piper. I want a man to kiss me like I’m the air he needs to breathe. I want that so much it hurts.

Alpha Henry may be older than us, but he’s a lot like Alpha Michael. He’s stayed in shape and he’s strong, strong enough to hold his own against five Academy cadets who are or were battling for a spot on an elite fighting squad.

After getting some food to go, not feeling like being with anyone, I make my way to the showers. My mind is so busy with thoughts of how I can make sure get my spot on a squad, that it isn’t until I try to enter the shower and I’m met with a locked door, that I hear Piper and Alpha Henry inside.

Jealousy floods my system again. It’s not just because I can hear Piper crying out as she comes. It’s Henry’s chants of ‘mine’, over and over again that make my heart hurt so much that I want to cry.

Will there ever be a time when a man wants me so much that he has to verbally claim me while he claims my body?

Will it ever not be enough that he’s making me come, but he has to pronounce to me and the world that I’m his? Will any man ever want me this much?I turn and head back to my room. I’ll shower later, after they’re gone. Right now, l just need to be alone. I need to find a way to get my father’s voice out of my head, the voice that says that no man will ever want me.

Piper POV

Once Hijack calls our meeting to order, the Councilasks Vivienne to recount her story about our father. Ididn’t realize that Luna Kennedy was in the room with them until Vivienne began to break down and Luna Kennedy put her arm around her entering the video frame.

“Take your time, Vivienne. We’re all here for you,” she says.

“Kennedy is right, Vivienne. We all understand that this is difficult for you. Take your time,” Alpha Warren says.

Vivienne takes a deep breath and continues the story, recounting the night she found out that my mother had died because of my father’s infidelity and then the night that our father killed her mother.

As she’s talking, I’ve been watching the three members of the tech team. They are obviously on a group chat, and they periodically nod to each other before one of them begins typing at a ridiculously fast speed. Their ability to multi-task is incredible.

Hacker grabs his phone, quickly typing out a text message. A moment later, Wendy’s phone pings and she puts it under the table, reading the text and smiling before responding. When Hacker checks his messages and smiles, I know that there’s more between them than I realized.

I’m used to Councilman Edward taking the lead and asking questions, so I’m surprised when Councilwoman Rebecca leans forward and begins to gently ask Vivienne questions.

She answers what she can, giving her mother’s name, to which Hacker’s fingers start racing over his keyboard. She gives them the basic address of where they were living when her mother was killed and Tracker’s fingers start moving at the speed of light with that information. When she tells them that Grady took her mother’s body to hide it, Hijack goes into action.

“Alpha Piper, I take it you were not aware of any of this prior to this weekend?” Councilman Edward says.

Henry squeezes my hand, letting me know he’s here for me.

“No, Councilman. All of this was new information to me.

Of course, I knew my mother was deceased, but I didn’t realize that it was my father’s infidelity that caused it.”

“You have two younger brothers, correct?” Alpha Warren asks me.

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Do you think they might be involved in any of this?” he asks.”What are their names?” Hacker asks me.

“Gage and Gavin,” I say.

“Ages?” Tracker asks.

“Gage is eighteen, and Gavin is seventeen. To answer your question, Alpha Warren, I have no idea. I wouldn’t have known any of this if it weren’t for Vivienne.

“If you had to guess, based on what you know about them, would you say they could be involved in this?” Councilman Nicholas asks.

I sigh and turn to Henry. He squeezes my hand again.

“My father raised them to be just like him, so yes, it’s very possible that they are part of this.”

Hijack’s fingers begin speed typing again.

“Alpha Michael informed us that they were at the Academy this afternoon, confronting you, Alpha Piper.

Can you tell us about that?” Councilman Edward asks.
