Piper
After sobbing in my boyfriend’s, scratch that, my EX-boyfriend’s arms, I went back to my room so I could try to make myself look presentable for afternoon classes. I ran to the bathroom, splashed water on my face, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and then went back to the main area to meet up with my friends.
Cyra instantly pulls me into a hug.
“He’s gone,” she says softly.
“He better be,
“I say, needing the hug more than want to admit.
“He said to tell you he’ll be back,” Yorick says as I pull away from Cyra.
“Hopefully, he’ll accept my rejection next time. And I swear to Moon Goddess if he sleeps with that woman before he accepts my rejection and starts weakening me, I will hunt him down like a dog and make him regret the moment he ever laid eyes on me,” I snarl.
“I’ll call him tonight and make sure he knows that if they ve been intimate, he needs to cut that off until he accepts your rejection,” Yorick says.
“Just the fact that you feel the need to tell him that makes me wonder what level of hell the Moon Goddess thinks I deserve to pair me with a man like that. And for the record, he smelled enough like her that I know they’ve stept together. I’m not blaming him for that. That would be hypocritical, But I already know that Zach and I are done. I’m sure you knew that already, right?” | ask Zach as he jogs up, holding a sub for me.
“That my nights of burning in a hellfire are done? Yeah. I’d be disappointed in you if we weren’t.”
I nod, feeling my throat tighten. He understands. I knew he would. But, I’m not sure the man who is supposed to be my mate does.
Cyra slides her arm through mine as we begin to walk to class.
“Why didn’t he accept my rejection?” I whisper.
“Henry has always wanted to find his mate. He’s older thán we are Pipes. He’s almost thirty-four. He waited a long time to find you. He’d given up. I’m not making excuses for him, but as an Alpha, as a man who has waited over fifteen years to find his fated mate, I can understand why he might feel like his mate wasn’t out there,” Yorick says.
I close my eyes. “You know what? Maybe this is for the best. Now, he can get on with his life and l’ll know from an early age that my fated mate is not for me. I won’t have to wonder my entire life if or when I’m going to meet him. I already know he chose someone else.””It didn’t feel like he was choosing her,” Cyra says.
“He already did, Cyra.”
She opens her mouth like she wants to argue with me, but we walk into the classroom and the rest of the afternoon, I try my hardest to focus on my classes. My mind, however, has other ideas.
Battle strategy. That woman clinging to Henry s arm.
Corporate shell games. Henry’s intense green eyes.
Financial takedown. The feel of Henry’s body touching mine.
By the time afternoon classes are over, I feel wound so tight that I know I still can’t eat. We head back to our rooms and I tell the others to go ahead without me.
“You didn’t eat lunch, Hellfire,” Zach says quietly.
Since he and I are as much friends as we were lovers, I’m honest with him.
“I don’t think I could get it past my throat and if I did, I’m afraid it would come right back up.”
He nods in understanding. “I’ll come check on you later.”
“Thanks, Zach. I’ll be okay.”
“I know you will. We’re all going to make sure of it.
Nobody douses our hellfire.”He pulls me into a quick hug before heading to his room.
When I get to mine, I immediately feel like the walls are closing in on me. So, I change my clothes and head to the workout room.
I nod at Raptor when I walk in. He’s the current leader of Alpha Squad, the squad I want to join. Then I head straight to the punching bags. 1 need to hit something.
I start out slow, letting my body warm up, and then I begin punching like I mean it. I punch that possessive look off that woman’s face. I punch the arrogant look on Henry’s face when I told him he had three seconds to release me. I punch Henry for not coming to any of Cyra’s court dates. I punch that woman for clinging to Henry even after he called me his. I punch Henry for making me hurt like this.
And then I punch him again, and again, and again.
“Need someone to hold that bag for you?” Raptor asks, walking over.
