IRIS.
Janice also shared that they never liked Tricia, as she acted like she had the power to order people around whenever the Alpha took her with him.
I just listened, but later on, I took the opportunity to ask about Felicity and why she left.
“I never met Felicity. All of us never did.” She answered.
“What do you mean?”
“He fired everyone who worked in his house when she left, so the ones you see here, like me, got this job after Felicity left. But the others, like Mirelle, the one at the front door with you, she was just here for two months. The Alpha can fire us at any time with just one wrong move. So what I’m doing, which is talking to you. I’m sure the Alpha won’t like this.”
“I’m sorry. Is he really like that?”
She nodded. “He never listens or asks for an explanation. He would just fire his people. That’s why I stayed behind while Miss Tricia was speaking to you. One of the maids in the old house was fired because Miss Tricia told him something, and he didn’t ask but just fired her. That poor maid said Miss Tricia was lying, but there was no one there to speak on her behalf. So I want to make sure if Miss Tricia will lie and tell the Alpha things against you, I can tell him she was lying, as I was there.”
I reached for her hand and squeezed it. “Thank you. I appreciate that.”
“I like you. It’s only been two days since you came, but the house is calmer. We don’t often see the Alpha around, but when we do, it’s like we are walking on fire, as he would just be upset with anything and start shouting.”
“He shouts all the time?” I asked.
She nodded. “I don’t know how he was when Felicity was here, but maybe he is always angry now because they are no longer together. They said the bond is so special that the two halves will always complement each other. Maybe she was his calm, and without her, the Alpha is like that. But I will never know what it’s like to have a mate. Only a few know because a fated mate bond is so rare.”
I swallowed. I wondered if my presence could also calm Alpha Draco, because hearing her say that about Felicity hurt me. I wanted to be his calm.
“I hope the Alpha won’t fire me for talking too much, but I can’t stop talking to you.” She added, snapping me from my thoughts. “Miss Iris, please don’t think I’m trying to ruin the Alpha’s image.”
I shook my head. “I will never tell him you told me things.”
“I really like working here. The Alpha might be angry almost all the time, but the pay is good and we work reasonable hours. As long as I don’t do anything bad or go against him, I can keep this job.”
“I promise, I won’t ask more questions.” I smiled at her.
“You’re so beautiful.” She smiled warmly at me, reminding me of how my mother used to smile at me when she was still alive. “If the Alpha will take a Luna, I hope he chooses you.”
“You don’t know me yet to wish that.”
“Maybe, but I can see a person when they are only pretending to be kind. Miss Tricia is certainly that.”
I put my finger on my lips, silencing her. “We don’t want anyone to hear you say that. I don’t want you to get fired.”
She smiled at me, and I decided to change the topic, asking her if there was anything in the house I could help with.
—-----------
Janice refused to let me help in the kitchen, as they were not instructed, and she would rather not be reprimanded. So I ended up in the garden, which was almost at the back of the packhouse.
I had picked up flowers that I had already asked Delta Liam to place in the Alpha’s office. And since I had nothing to do, I decided to clean up the rose bushes.
I was trimming the dead flowers and leaves to prevent them from taking nutrients and sunlight, so the others around them could bloom well, when I heard someone calling me. “Miss Iris! Miss Iris!”
I stood up and dropped the scissors in my hand before swiftly turning around. Mirelle was rushing toward me. My heart drummed loudly when I saw that her face was red and she was panting hard.
