Fiona, feeling utterly insulted, snapped, "What is that supposed to mean? Don't you forget, you are my son's fiancée. That makes me your future mother-in-law."
Elara scoffed. "Are you getting old, or is your memory just failing you? Shouldn't that ‘fiancée' title be in quotation marks? And future mother-in-law? My last mother-in-law met a rather unfortunate end. Are you hoping for the same fate?"
Fiona's face went pale. "I don't care what you think. Jason was very upset when he didn't see you this morning. From now on, you will visit him every day. And when he's discharged in a few days, you will move into the Lawrence family estate with him."
Before Elara could respond, Fiona added, "This is an order, not a discussion. My son taking a liking to a second-hand divorcee like you is a blessing! Don't be ungrateful!"
The insult would have infuriated anyone else, but Elara simply smiled.
Fiona was bewildered. "What are you smiling about?"
"Mrs. Lawrence, your relationship with your husband is more like roommates, isn't it?"
"How dare you! What right do you have to comment on my marriage?"
"You seem like a Victorian relic your husband keeps around the house for decoration," Elara said with a serene smile. "Your mind is filled with outdated notions of male superiority and class hierarchies. It's no wonder he prefers to seek out fresh, vibrant company elsewhere. After all, waking up next to a museum piece every day must be terribly draining."
Fiona's face turned a shade of purple. "You—you have no respect for your elders! You're talking nonsense!"
Elara's smile vanished. "If you feel that my playing along with your son's delusion isn't enough to repay my debt to him, then I quit. Name your price for damages. I'll pay what I can, and the rest in installments. After that, we can go our separate ways and stay out of each other's lives."
If Jason Lawrence heard that, he'd probably need a defibrillator. Fiona would never agree to it.
"It wasn't for you," Summer cut in. "Ignition Dynamics is my company. I'm not letting some old witch wreak havoc in it."
She always said it wasn't for Elara, but it always was. Elara felt her eyes well up and quickly looked down before Summer could see.
That afternoon, she remembered her promise and brought the caramel flan to Zane. He sent her a location, and she realized it was in a high-security area that required a special pass to enter.
To her surprise, Quincy Shelton was already waiting for her at the gate. He led her through multiple security checkpoints, down a corridor so quiet that the only sound was their footsteps. The imposing dark walnut doors lining the hallway exuded an air of impenetrable authority.
When he pushed open the final, unmarked door at the end of the hall, Zane looked up from behind a large desk. His cold, impassive gaze softened the moment he saw Elara.
Quincy discreetly slipped out of the room as Zane stood to greet her. He naturally took the container from her hand while his other arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him. He lowered his head and kissed her…
