Elara was astounded that a plant could be valued more than a person. Suddenly, her eyes were drawn to a leaf on the lowest branch. It was so close to the ground that it could easily be stepped on. The tip was broken off, and the tear looked as though it would match the piece Brian had perfectly.
He hadn't been lying. The attacker had been in contact with someone from the Lawrence family.
Elara's gaze shifted to Mrs. Lawrence. "I've heard that when your husband was younger, he had quite a few beautiful women around him, but you handled them all. The ones who didn't comply simply disappeared. I was hoping you could teach me a few tricks to keep my own man in line."
Fiona scoffed. "A divorced woman like you is lucky to have any man at all, and you have the audacity to ask me for advice on how to control Jason? Let me be clear: don't think you can take advantage of his memory loss to get into his bed. I will never approve of you, not even if you beg me on your knees."
Elara studied her reaction, then sneered. "Good. I hope you don't change your mind. You should keep a better leash on your son."
Fiona was already fuming. "So why did you come to my house?"
A smirk played on Elara's lips as she finally revealed her purpose. "To aid in Jason's recovery, I've agreed to stay here for a while."
Fiona snorted. "What's the matter? Did your little game of playing hard-to-get stop working?"
It was a pre-relationship agreement for her and Jason, with incredibly harsh terms. It stipulated that Elara must unconditionally cooperate with Jason's treatment and move out of Lawrence Manor immediately upon his recovery. She was also forbidden from seeking any financial compensation. The most insulting clause required her to marry another man within a week of leaving and provide proof of marriage, to "completely sever her delusional attachments and restore peace to the Lawrence family."
Elara laughed out loud. "How many times have you used this tactic, Mrs. Lawrence?"
Fiona's tone grew even more acidic. "For someone like you—with a lowly background, parents unknown, who somehow managed to bewitch my son—signing this is an honor. If you want to live here, then sign it!"
Fiona looked away smugly. She had been so high and mighty before, rejecting every offer. Now, after just one day of Jason not contacting her, she had come crawling back. Fiona was determined to crush what little dignity she had left; it was the only way to control her.
