It felt like a scene from a brothel, with a madam brokering a deal. Mr. Fielding was practically drooling, nodding enthusiastically.
"Mrs. Lawrence, what is the meaning of this?" Elara asked.
Fiona smiled sweetly. "Isn't it obvious? I'm introducing you to a potential husband." She gestured to the man beside her. "Mr. Fielding is a successful entrepreneur, and his wife just passed away. He's in need of someone to warm his bed. You like to climb the social ladder and find rich men, don't you? See? You're perfect for each other."
Elara's expression remained calm, and she even managed a fake smile. "So you even scheme against your own family, Mrs. Lawrence. What does family mean to you? Power? Status? Certainly not love."
Fiona's face fell. "This is a condition of you staying at our home. If you don't agree, the deal is off."
Elara understood. If she didn't agree to marry Mr. Fielding, Fiona would not allow her to be with Jason or stay at the Lawrence estate.
"Then… let me speak with Mr. Fielding alone," Elara said.
Fiona, pleased that she was complying, readily agreed. She gave Mr. Fielding a meaningful look. "This is a private room. No one will disturb you. You two can get to know each other."
As soon as the door closed, Mr. Fielding reached for Elara, but she dodged him. "Come on, beautiful, don't fight it," he said with a lecherous grin. "Mrs. Lawrence has already decided. Just accept it and make it easy on yourself."
He lunged for her again, and again, she sidestepped him. "Mr. Fielding, even if you're in a hurry, you could at least let me finish what I have to say."
Though he was impatient, her beauty made him pause. "Fine, fine. Make it quick."
Elara lowered her eyes, feigning reluctance. "There's something I don't know if I should say… Sending me to you was just an excuse for Mrs. Lawrence. She… she…"
