A low, deep laugh rumbled from Zane's chest. It was a rare, unguarded sound of pure amusement, something he seldom showed in front of others.
Driving, Quincy Shelton glanced in the rearview mirror and sighed inwardly. He had privately suggested that Zane get a couple of Miss Jules's hairs for a DNA test, but his boss had yet to act on it, though he hadn't dismissed the idea either. Quincy couldn't tell if he was hesitating, weighing the options, or simply afraid of what he might find.
The car stopped in front of her apartment building. Elara slid off Zane's lap. Strangely, he had been a perfect gentleman this time. Ever since he had returned from Greenhaven City, he had kissed her every time they met, but tonight, he had stopped at just holding her.
"Well, I'm heading up. See you later."
She opened the door to get out, but to her surprise, Zane got out as well.
Elara paused. "What are you doing?"
With his hands in his pockets, Zane walked calmly toward the building entrance, tossing two words over his shoulder as he passed her. "Going up."
She followed him into the elevator and watched as he confidently pressed the button for her floor. The questions in her mind grew. The elevator ascended in a quiet, charged atmosphere.
She studied his profile. "Didn't you say it was late and you should be getting home?"
His gaze shifted from the floor numbers to her, a playful glint in his eyes. "Are you wondering why I haven't kissed you yet today?"
Elara's face flushed, and she looked away. When the doors opened, she rushed out, but Zane kept pace with her. She stopped in front of her apartment, about to turn and demand what he wanted, when she saw him walk to the apartment next to hers—the one that had always been empty—and enter a code.
