Elara startled.
Zane had gone to take a shower after leaving her, so he couldn't be back this quickly.
She thought about splashing some water on her face before opening the door, but her hands froze mid-air. Instead, she spun around and rushed back into the bathroom, washing her hands and face meticulously before finally heading for the door.
Ryan was waiting patiently outside. When she opened it, a smile lit up his face.
"Are you hungry?" he asked.
"There's cake in the fridge," Elara said, stepping aside to let him in.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Ryan's eyes as he entered, and only then did Elara notice the insulated container he was holding.
"Just put it on the table," she told him. "We can have that before we get to dessert."
At her words, the light returned to Ryan's eyes.
He opened the lid, revealing a bowl of hearty beef noodle soup. The aroma was unmistakable—this was Rose Linden's cooking. Back when the Linden family was struggling, a simple bowl of noodles made by Gage had been a rare luxury. Now, this soup was the one dish Rose had mastered from Gage's recipe, the closest anyone could get to his original creation.
"I just came from her place to get my dressing changed," Ryan explained. "She asked me to bring this to you."
Elara snapped out of her memories, her eyelashes fluttering. "What is it?"
Ryan remained silent for a long moment, his expression turning grim. "Fiona set me up. I might be facing prison time."
Elara had just been about to eat the noodles with her left hand, but his words made her look up sharply.
