Emily looked flustered. "Since when did Mr. Sterling catch a cold?

He looks totally fine to me."

"I said he has a cold, so he has a cold," Sophia insisted. The more insistent Emily was, the more suspicious Sophia became of her true intentions.

Emily pouted, "Sophia, you're being so unreasonable! Mr. Sterling isn't your man-why do you act like you get to decide for him?"

Sophia narrowed her eyes at Emily, voice chilly. "Why are you so eager to get Mr. Sterling drinking, huh? What, did you put something in that wine?"

Emily hadn't expected Sophia to be so sharp. Just remembering how Sophia had tricked her last time made her skin crawl.

"What nonsense are you spouting? I just think a man's not a real man if he doesn't drink." Emily shot back, trying to sound casual.

She almost blurted out something about Richard being a wimp, hoping to rile him up and get him to take the glass, but that would've been way too obvious.

Sophia was way too sharp for that.

After what happened at the Evans residence, Sophia was definitely on guard around her.

'Whatever, I didn't actually spike the wine, Emily thought to herself.

Annabelle tsked and teased. "Emily, is Uncle Richard really the one you're plotting to get close to?"

"Oh, not at all! Since Mr. Sterling can't have any wine, let me fetch you a nice cup of warm water instead. This spicy fish is pretty fiery =I just wouldn't want you struggling with the heat," she said, her voice dripping with fake concern.

With that, Emily got up and went to pour some water.
