Too Pretty to Be Your Backup novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Amanda pinched her nose, making a face like she’d just smelled something rotten. Without a word, she grabbed the blanket off the couch and tossed it right over Travis, covering him from head to toe,

face and all.

She called out toward the kitchen, Michelle, can you make some coffee for Travis?

And with that, she turned and headed upstairs.

Mateo frowned. You’re not making it yourself?

He remembered all the other times he’d brought Travis home after a night out. Back then, Amanda would always rush to meet them at the door, fuss over Travis, wipe his face, make him coffee, and stay up with him all night. Her eyes would be full of worry and love.

But now?

Amanda didn’t even slow down. I’m not his maid. He’s the one who decided to get drunk, so he can deal with it himself.

Honestly, she nearly said, If he drinks himself to death, that’s his own fault, but even she realized that was a little too much, like she was cursing him. She didn’t want that kind of karma. As long as Travis left her alone, she wasn’t interested in hurting him with words.

Watching Amanda walk away without even a glance back, Mateo suddenly understood why Travis felt so lost. Even as an outsider, he could feel just how much the situation had changed. If he could sense it, what must it feel like for Travis himself?

He let out a silent sigh for his friend. Maybe it was time for Travis to wake up and end things with Amanda, and hopefully do it peacefully. If not, things were only going to get worse for him.

Up in her room, Amanda flopped onto her bed. She and Travis were a couple, sure, but they’d always had separate bedrooms. Even on those nightstwice a month, like clockworkwhen they’d sleep together, Travis would still go back to his own room afterward.

It used to make her feel empty. Now, she was grateful for it.

She should’ve seen it sooner; their relationship was twisted, full of problems. But at least it wasn’t too late to walk away.

A knock sounded at her door. Then she heard Travisvoice, thick with booze.

Amanda, open up. Amanda, come on, open the door.

Her lip curled. She filled a glass with water in the bathroom, yanked open the door, and without hesitating, dumped the whole thing right in Travisface.

She glared at him. Travis, if you’re going to be a drunk mess, do it in your own room. Don’t bring it in

here.

Big drops of water rolled down his handsome face, making him look like a ruined sculpture. If it had been the old Amanda, she probably would’ve snapped a photo for herself.

But now? She felt nothing. All she had left was disappointment.
