Amanda slammed the door behind her.

Travis stood out in the hallway, wiping the water off his face. He hadn’t even drunk that much. He just wanted an excuse to patch things up with Amanda, and blaming it on a little alcohol seemed easier than saying the truth. But now-

He let out a heavy sigh. She was really mad about the canceled engagement party this time. Actually mad enough to kick up a fuss.

Travis rubbed his forehead, feeling a wave of helplessness hit him. He’d chosen Amanda to be Mrs. Hill because she was always so calm and understanding. She never made scenes or picked fights. Most of the time, she handled her emotions quietly, and if he gave her a way out, she’d always take it without drama.

But this time, she was different. She was actually fighting back, and honestly, he had no idea what to do with that. He’d never dealt with anything like this before.

He sighed again. Whatever. He’d just give her some space. Maybe moving out for a while would help. Once she calmed down and figured things out, he’d come back.

Amanda had no idea what Travis was thinking. She wasn’t worried about him at all. In fact, she barely spared him a thought as she stretched out on her big bed and slept better than she had in ages.

She didn’t wake up until noon.

When she finally wandered downstairs, Michelle greeted her with a warm, motherly smile. “Amanda, come eat. Lunch is ready.”

Amanda grinned and plopped down at the table, acting like the perfect angel. “Thanks, Michelle. Nobody cooks like you do.”

“Oh, you’re just trying to make me happy,” Michelle teased, but she couldn’t hide how pleased she was as she brought over Amanda’s plate.

But as Michelle hovered nearby, Amanda noticed the worry on her face,

“If you have something to say, Michelle, just say it,” Amanda said gently. “Really, it’s fine.”

Michelle hesitated, then blurted out, “Amanda, is something going on between you and Mr. Hill?”

Amanda just shrugged. “We broke up.”

Michelle’s eyes went wide. “You broke up?”

Amanda nodded. “Yeah. It’s over.”

Michelle’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Is it because of the engagement party?”

She couldn’t understand Travis at all. Canceling an engagement party was a huge deal. How many times does a girl get engaged in her life? And he just canceled it, like it meant nothing, without a second thought about how much it would hurt Amanda. It was just too much.

Amanda sighed “Sort of, she admitted. But that wasn’t the whole story. Hearts don’t just freeze overnight

She’d loved Travis for seven years, loved him with everything she had–without holding anything back. But that kind of love was exhausting. She got tired, she got hurt, and she got sad. In return for her devotion, all she got from Travis was indifference, humiliation, distrust, and neglect.

She just couldn’t do it anymore. Loving him had drained her, little by little, until she had nothing left to give. The canceled engagement was just the last straw.
