Too Pretty to Be Your Backup novel Chapter 31

Chapter 31

Amanda finally felt calm, like a storm had passed and left behind only quiet.

She had spent seven years loving Travis, trying everything to win his heart. It never worked. All that time just made her realize how far apart they really were.

She still loved him. That hadn’t changed. But she’d run out of the courage to chase after him, to throw herself at him like she used to. Why did she keep fighting for something that was always going to end in heartbreak? She was just tired. So tired.

Hannah stared at her, totally stunned. What did you just say? You don’t want to marry my son?

Amanda’s answer was steady, almost gentle. That’s right. I’m not marrying him.”

A dull ache thudded in her chest. Marrying Travis had been her dream for as long as she could remember. She had spent years holding onto that hope, trying to make it real. But now she could see some things just weren’t meant to be. You can’t force two people to fit together if they don’t.

Hannah wasted no time. She jabbed a finger at the door. Fine, you said it. Then get out of my son’s house. Right now.

Relief flashed in Hannah’s eyes. She had never liked Amanda, never thought she was good enough for Travis. But Travis chose to be with her, and Amanda had stuck around like gum on a shoe, impossible to shake off. Now, Amanda was finally giving up. It was almost too good to be true.

If Amanda wasn’t going to marry Travis, what right did she have to stay in his home?

Amanda’s eyes actually lit up. I’ll leave! Right now!

She practically bounced down the stairs, grinning to herself. This was perfect. Travisown mother was kicking her out. She was being forced to leave. Time to go!

But just as she reached the stairs, a strong hand grabbed her wrist. Before she could react, she was pulled into a familiar, cool embrace.

Travis.

His scent hit her all at once, achingly familiar. He tilted her chin up, making her meet his cold, unreadable eyes.

Where do you think you’re going? His voice was soft, but there was steel in it.

Amanda blinked in surprise. He was still here? Shouldn’t he be at work by now?

She jerked her head away and pushed him off, straightening her pajamas and doing her best to look unfazed.

Your mom told me to leave, she said, shrugging.

Hannah had spotted Travis too, and for a second she looked just as shocked. But she recovered fast, turning to her son with a bright smile. See, Amanda’s finally letting you go! You can move on now. I’ll help you find someone new. You always have a thing for Leila, didn’t you? I can arrange it.Amanda nodded, more than happy to speed things along. Yes, please, go ahead.”
