“Amanda, get down here! Right now!”
It was barely morning, and Amanda was still half–asleep when Hannah’s voice echoed through the villa, sharp enough to make the windows rattle. Only Hannah could make that kind of noise. Amanda tried to ignore it, but there was no way she could sleep through the shouting.
With a sigh, she rubbed her eyes and opened her bedroom door.
Downstairs, Hannah looked every bit the part in her designer clothes, but the way she was acting was a whole different story. She was in full meltdown mode, knocking things off the table, smashing glass all over the floor. Michelle, the housekeeper, just stood quietly by the kitchen door, clearly used to this kind of drama.
The second Hannah spotted Amanda, her eyes narrowed and she practically hissed, “Amanda, why didn’t you show up yesterday? Do you have any idea how much you embarrassed me?”
Amanda leaned against the upstairs railing, resting her chin in her hand, a lazy smile on her face. “Hannah, your reputation is up to you, not anyone else. If you felt embarrassed, that’s on you, not
me.”
Hannah’s face tightened. “Are you calling me an embarrassment?”
Amanda shrugged. “You said it, not me.”
Hannah’s voice rose another octave. “How dare you talk to me like that? With an attitude like yours, do you really think you’re fit to be Travis‘ wife?” She looked Amanda up and down, her gaze dripping with contempt. “If you want to be my daughter–in–law, you’ll do as I say and make sure I’m happy. Hannah was practically daring her to disagree, convinced marriage into the Hill family was Amanda’s weak spot–the one thing that would make her cave, every time.
Amanda rubbed her still–sleepy face. “You’re absolutely right. The Hill family is all about rules and prestige. You should hurry up and find your son a proper match. Leila seems perfect. You should really set them up. Seriously, go for it!”
Hannah froze, clearly thrown off. Normally, just mentioning Leila around Amanda was enough to start fireworks. But now Amanda was the one pushing Travis and Leila together? And was she even sounding a little… annoyed with Travis?
Hannah’s scowl deepened. “Who are you to look down on my son? Travis is the most eligible bachelor in town. The Hill family is one of the city’s elite. You should be grateful he even noticed you.”
Amanda nodded, not missing a beat. “You’re right, your son is great, your family is amazing. I’m totally not good enough, so please, hurry up and find him someone else. The sooner, the better.”
Maybe then Travis would finally stop keeping her on a leash.
Hannah was at a loss for words. What was going on with Amanda today? “Don’t flatter yourself, my son doesn’t need you.”
Amanda nodded again, her tone suddenly serious. “Exactly. Travis Hill, everyone’s golden boy. I get it,
