Ms. Dennis gave Amanda’s shoulder a gentle, reassuring pat. “This is your decision. I’m not going to push you, but I really hope you’ll think it over.”
Amanda nodded.
away.
Mary glanced at her nephew, who was practically radiating affection, then waved them both “Alright, it’s getting late. I won’t hold you for dinner. I need to touch up my painting for tomorrow’s competition.”
Amanda and Shane said their goodbyes and headed out.
By the time they stepped outside, it was already dinner time. Amanda thought back to how Shane had helped her out at the police station yesterday.
“Hey, Shane, thanks again for yesterday. Let me buy you dinner, okay?”
Shane grinned. “I’d love that. Do you have anywhere in mind?”
Amanda immediately thought of the steakhouse she and Cindy always raved about. The food was to die for and the vibe was perfect. If she wanted to show her appreciation, this was the place.
“I know this amazing steakhouse. Seriously, you’ll love it. I promise.”
Shane acted surprised, widening his eyes. “Really? With a review like that, how could I say no? Lead the way, Amanda. I’m ready to have my mind blown.”
Amanda shot him a confident thumbs–up. “Trust me, you won’t regret it. Everyone I’ve taken there has become obsessed.”
When they reached Shane’s car, he walked over and opened the passenger door for her. “Your ride awaits, princess.”
As he said it, his eyes lingered on her, warm and bright, almost sparkling.
Amanda suddenly felt her heart skip a beat. The air in the car seemed to thicken, charged with something she couldn’t quite name. Was he…? No way. Or maybe…?
She quickly cleared her throat and looked away. “We should get going, or we’ll end up waiting forever for a table.”
Shane just smiled, unfazed by her awkward segue. .He’d been waiting for 4 years. What was a few
more minutes?
Amanda’s heart was racing. Was it just her imagination, or had she only just realized that Shane might actually like her?
Barely able to focus, she fumbled for her phone and started texting Cindy, filling her in on every little thing Shane had just said and done.
She ended with: [Am I just overthinking this?]
Cindy’s reply came back in seconds.
[Girl, are you serious? You really only just now figured out that Shane likes you? I’ve known forever!]
