Too Pretty to Be Your Backup novel Chapter 60

This was unreal.

David sat off to the side, eyeing Amanda. There was something weird about her today, something he couldn’t quite name. She just feltdifferent.

Outside, Travis was on the phone with Zack.

Boss?

For the last few years, I’ve told Chad to buy gifts for Amanda for every holiday. She says she’s never gotten a single one. I want you to look into it. Find out where the gifts went, and where the money ended up.

Zack sucked in a sharp breath.

This was bad. Travis had money so any gift he picked out for Amanda wouldn’t be cheap. He’d sent gifts for every holiday, but Amanda hadn’t received any of them. Did Chad pocket the money?

No wonder Chad had sounded so shaken when Zack called to tell him about the lawsuit. The other stuff Chad had done wasn’t that big of a deal. He could have just paid the money back and ended up blacklisted. Jail wasn’t even on the table.

But if he’d stolen that much money

No wonder he was terrified.

I understand, sir.

Travis hung up, his hand clenched tight, frustration burning in his eyes.

Chad had guts, that was for sure. No wonder Amanda had started giving up on him these past few years. What exactly had Chad done behind his back?

Travis pressed his fingers to his temples. This was on him, too. He’d handed everything off to his assistant and never checked in. That’s how things had gotten so out of control. No wonder Amanda didn’t want to forgive him this time.

He let out a long sigh, exhaustion weighing on his handsome face. He thought about the gift he’d given Amanda today. She hadn’t even opened it. It was like she didn’t care anymore. Like she wasn’t expecting anything from him at all.

Travis headed for private room number eight. When the server opened the door, he was surprised to see not just Amanda, but Leila and David too.

He frowned in David’s direction. What are you guys doing here?

David lifted his hands in surrender. Leila was upset and wanted to eat out. You always bring her to room eight, so we just came in. Didn’t expect to run into Amanda, too. Total coincidence. A happy one, I guess.”

Amanda waved. Travis, come sit with us! Dinner’s better with more people anyway.

Chapter 60

Travis didn’t argue. He just walked over and sat down next to Amanda like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Leila looked at him with big, watery eyes, on the edge of tears. Travis, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were meeting Amanda. I shouldn’t have barged in. Please don’t be mad at me.

Travisface was unreadable. I’m not mad.

But his rigid expression, the tension in his jaw, and his icy attitude said otherwise.

Leila looked even more miserable. Travis
