When Amanda first moved in with the Hill family, there was this party where she felt totally out of place. Instead of forcing herself to mingle, she slipped away to the backyard to be alone.
That’s when she saw David and Jonah, wrapped up in each other’s arms.
She was only sixteen then, so she didn’t really think anything of it. It was the first time she’d ever seen either of them. Her innocent brain just figured they’d had a few too many drinks. She quietly backed away and left them alone.
Still, she had always been good at remembering details.
It wasn’t until later that she found out the two guys were Jonah and David. David was Travis' personal doctor—now Leila’s, really—and Jonah was Travis' college buddy and assistant. Jonah died in an accident before Amanda ever really got to know him, so she never thought much about what she’d seen that night.
But tonight, when David brought up Jonah, Amanda caught something strange in his voice. Was that a hitch? Maybe even a little bitterness? Suddenly, a wild theory popped into her head.
So she decided to push David a little.
And what do you know—she was right.
Interesting. Way too interesting.
David watched Amanda leave, a mysterious little smile playing on her lips, and felt a rush of anger rise in his chest. Her smile made him overthink everything. If she ever told anyone what she suspected, it would be a slap in the face to Jonah’s memory. He couldn’t let that happen.
A few seconds later, Amanda heard a loud crash from the private room—someone had flipped the table.
She just shrugged. “That set him off so easily?”
Honestly, such a fragile heart.
Outside, the rain had finally stopped. It almost felt like the whole storm had shown up just for Leila’s dramatic performance, timed perfectly.
