When David caught the dangerous glint in Travis' eyes, he tensed up on instinct. The bravado in his voice disappeared, replaced by something much more careful.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”
Travis stared him down, his gaze ice-cold and unreadable.
“David, you’re a doctor. Do your job and stay out of things that don’t concern you. And another thing—how did Leila end up there today? And why that particular room? Just because I haven’t said anything doesn’t mean I don’t know what’s going on. If you ever help her pull stunts like this again, you know exactly what’ll happen.”
A chill ran through David. He realized, maybe for the first time in years, just how much power Travis actually held. He’d gotten so used to Travis indulging Leila that he’d forgotten who he was really dealing with. He’s the head of the Hill family, someone who could decide your fate with a single word. And yet, David had actually argued with him, even lost his temper more than once. What was he thinking?
“Mr. Hill, I crossed the line.”
Travis barely looked at him as he pulled his hand away from Leila’s grip. Immediately, Leila burst into tears.
“No, don’t go, please!”
She reached out, grabbing at the empty air, desperate to hold onto him.
Travis shot David a look, and David got the message. He stepped forward and placed his hand in Leila’s. As soon as she felt someone there, she calmed down a little.
“Travis… I love you…” Leila choked out.
David’s heart skipped a beat. He glanced over at Travis just in time to see his tall, cold figure disappearing through the doorway, not even hesitating. He didn’t look back, didn’t react—just opened the hospital door and walked out like he hadn’t heard anything at all.
