Chad and his guys froze when they heard Travis' voice, their faces draining of color. They tried to bolt, but it was already too late. Travis' mercenaries were on them in a flash.
Travis ran straight to the edge of the cliff and looked down, squinting into the darkness. Even with night vision, all he could see was wild, rushing water below. Amanda… she’d jumped down there.
He felt like his heart had been ripped out. The image of Amanda leaping flashed through his mind—just like the time she’d jumped from the second floor, or when she’d scaled the wall. She never hesitated. She was always so sure of herself.
Regret hit him like a punch in the gut.
She’d told him she didn’t want this.
He’d pushed her anyway.
He’d promised he could protect her, promised everything would be fine. But he’d still driven her to the edge.
God, he hated himself for it.
Amanda had been right. He could’ve caught Chad another time. Leila would’ve been hurt a few more days, tops. Why had he risked Amanda’s life for this?
A storm raged in his eyes. His face was twisted with anger and panic, veins standing out on his forehead.
Declan, the head mercenary, had rounded everyone up and was about to ask Travis what to do next—
Then, suddenly—splash!
Travis jumped.
Declan’s jaw dropped. He rushed to the cliff’s edge, peering down into the rapids below. “Is he out of his mind? He actually jumped!”
Whether Amanda lived or died, it didn’t matter to him. But if Travis died, Mr. Hill would come after Declan for sure.
He just couldn’t believe it. Travis—the guy who was always in control—had jumped off a cliff for a girl.
Everyone was in shock. The mercenaries just stared, dumbfounded.
