David let out a bitter laugh. “Because the pay’s better overseas.”
If the driver hadn’t been there to grab him and stop the bleeding, he probably wouldn’t have made it.
Travis hadn’t just wanted to teach him a lesson; he’d meant to kill him.
And honestly, David knew he was at fault.
To save Leila, he’d agreed to Chad’s plan and hid a kidnapper in his car.
He know that could’ve gotten Amanda killed. He knew exactly what he was risking.
But he did it anyway.
Because Leila was Jonah’s favorite sister, and David couldn’t just stand by and watch something happen to her.
He watched Leila, his voice soft.
“Leila, would you come with me? Go overseas?”
If she said yes, he’d step up for Jonah—he’d take care of her for the rest of his life.
But as soon as the words left his mouth, Leila pulled her hand away. She stared at the floor, silent.
She didn’t need to say it. The answer was clear.
She wasn’t going with him.
She was staying here.
David’s lips twisted in a sad smile.
He’d seen this coming.
He reached out and gently patted her head. “Leila, I respect your choice. But I won’t be here to look after you anymore. Please, take care of yourself.”
Leila’s eyes brimmed with tears, heartbreak written all over her face.
“David…”
He sighed in his heart.
Amanda had survived, and she was going to be Leila’s biggest obstacle now.
David stood. “Leila, I have to go. I just wanted to see you before I left. Take care, okay?”
Leila started crying.
“David, I don’t want you to leave.”
She grabbed his sleeve, desperate for him to stay.
Chad was arrested, and if David left too, she’d be almost completely alone.
David was powerless.
He didn’t want to leave, but he didn’t have a choice.
For the first time ever, he pulled her hand off his sleeve.
“Leila, I really have to go this time. Look after yourself.”
