Chapter 91
They put on their gear and began skiing.
Betty was still learning, and Ashley, a seasoned skier, patiently guided her.
The resort was crowded. Zark stayed close, protecting them from collisions.
But the crowd was overwhelming.
After an hour, two girls bumped into them. Betty was fine, but Ashley fell against Zark. Zark instinctively caught her, pulling her close. Startled by his embrace, Ashley felt uncomfortable. She tried to push him away, but her foot was injured.
Zark didn’t let go of her.”Did you twist your ankle?”
‘I think… so.”
He called for help, instructing someone to watch Betty while he carefully picked Ashley up. She was surprised he didn’t use a staff member.
Put me down!” she protested.
The doctor is here. Let’s take care of your ankle first.”
She didn’t resist. Going back, he set her down. The doctor diagnosed a minor dislocation and quickly popped it back into place.
Zark asked, “Still skiing?”
“I’m fine. Let’s continue.” She didn’t want to disappoint Betty.
“Catherine, what are you looking at?”
Catherine turned. “I think I saw an acquaintance.”
The man in front of them looked really like Zark. But he was with a woman and a child. Was it really him?
She tried to get a better look but he had put on his gear and left.
Ashley and Betty continued skiing. They were bumped twice more but weren’t hurt. Ashley gently pulled away from Zark’s hand. “I’m okay, thank you.”
They left for lunch. Zark offered her the menu. Betty asked, “Auntie, what’s your name?”
“Ashley Jones.”
“Aunt Ashley, Betty said. Ashley smiled, patting her cheek.
Betty fell asleep mid-meal. Zark held her, wiping her mouth.
Ashley finished eating. That’s all for today?”
“Okay. He didn’t get up, but looked at her.”Can we do this again?”
“Sure.” She felt obligated to reciprocate his help.”Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
With Betty asleep, Ashley left without further conversation. Zark watched her leave,
Betty woke up at home. Aunt Ashley is gone?”
“Mm-hmm. Zark hugged her.”Betty, just call her Auntie, not Aunt Ashley, okay? And keep her name a secret, alright?”
Betty nodded obediently.”Okay.”
After lunch, Ashley received a call from Cindy.
‘Ashley, where are you? I’m exhausted. Come get me for dinner.”
Ashley didn’t mention she’d already eaten.”Where are you?”
“Lilian Court,” Cindy said. That new traditional-style building. I’ve been house hunting with my aunt all morning. I’m dead tired.”
“Okay,”
Ashley adjusted her navigation and headed to Lilian Court. Ten minutes later, Cindy called again.”Damn it. Guess who I ran into here?”
Ashley paused. Cindy only swore when she met someone she really hated.
“Chase and Tanya-and her whole family! He brought the Monds to view houses!”
