Chapter 97
Chase fell silent.
Then, he said, ‘Okay.”
Ashley hung up and drove to Chase’s villa.
Sam was already packed. Seeing Ashley, he ignored her, clinging to Chase. He was still upset about the skiing trip.
Chase looked up at Ashley, frowning.”Didn’t sleep well?”
She looked tired and disheveled without makeup. She replied coldly,”Mm-hmm.” The butler chimed in,”Insomnia? We have excellent sleep-inducing
incense…”
Ashley explained, “I usually sleep well. We went camping last night; I’m not used to sleeping outdoors.”
The butler frowned.”Camping in winter? Mrs. Sterling, you might have caught a cold!”
Ashley smiled. They had snowball fights, built snowmen, played hide-and-seek… It was a lot of fun.”
Everyone else had seemed to enjoy the trip.
She was slightly envious.
Chase, lowering his newspaper, looked thoughtfully at her.
Sam, however, was irritated. His mother hadn’t apologized to him yet, and now she was talking about fun camping trip!
He jumped off the sofa to run upstairs. Ashley frowned, but Chase said calmly,”Sam, come back.”
Chase’s tone was even, but Sam stopped. Pouted, he returned, but not to Ashley. Clinging to Chase, he said, “Daddy, can we go camping, too?”
Chase, ignoring Ashley, lightly brushed Sam’s nose. “Daddy’s busy. Be good and listen to your mother.”
“Okay,” Sam mumbled, reluctantly glancing at Ashley before reaching for her hand. It was a tacit apology.
Ashley took his hand and left.
Emily was already at the Jones residence. Seeing only Ashley and Sam, she frowned. “Where’s Chase? He’s busy again?”
“Mm-hmm.”
Emily picked up her phone to call Chase. Amanda had known about the impending divorce, so she intervened. “He’s busy. Leave him alone.” Sam went upstairs to play video games with Henry.
Ashley chatted with the two elders. Mrs. Emily adored Amanda’s new paintings, especially learning they were done with the stationery set Ashley had gifted her,
Emily loved the stationery set too.”Where’s Chase? Did he get you anything?”
“Yes,” Amanda said, though less cheerfully when mentioning him.”I le sent me a high-quality emerald necklace, and a lovely embroidered painting.”
Emily smiled. “That’s great. It seems he listened to me.”
