Chapter 96
Darkness had fallen, and the mountain air grew colder.
Zark retrieved his phone and returned. Ashley and Betty were huddled together, eating and chatting.
He went back to the tent and returned with two thick coats-one large, one small.
He offered the larger one to Ashley.
“I’m not cold…” she refused.
“Put it on. He draped it over her shoulders, then gave the smaller one to Betty.
Ashley wasn’t cold, but the coat blocked the wind, making her warmer.
So, she accepted it.
After dinner, they headed to the bonfire. Someone exclaimed, “Wow, what a striking family!”
Ashley corrected them, “We’re not a family.” People chuckled, suggesting that they might become one someday.
Betty joined the kids. People chatted, played cards, built snowmen, and had snowball fights. Ashley and Zark, barely acquainted, fell silent. There wasn’t much to talk about. Family matters, particularly involving Chase and Tanya, were off-limits. Work talk risked revisiting their unpleasant encounter at Speed.
Finally, Zark spoke.”How’s Eternal? Are you settling in?”
Ashley, idly weaving a butterfly from grass, replied,”Good.”
Tim takes good care of you.”
“Mm-hmm.”
You majored in AI?”
Yes.”
“How did you meet Tim?”
Ashley didn’t answer. Zark saw her reluctance and the distance she maintained.
He understood why, so he didn’t press further.
He took several calls during the evening.
By the time he returned, it was late.
Ashley had woven several butterflies for Betty, who really treasured them and put them into her pocket. Ashley’s smile faltered.
Sam had once adored her creations, but those days were gone.
Betty wanted to sleep with Ashley,
Zark asked Ashley about it and she agreed.
Betty snuggled into Ashley’s arms. They would sleep in separate sleeping bags in the same tent.
Betty was a bit frail and she woke up with a cold.
Ashley, also sleep-deprived, felt unwell. Zark decided to take Betty to the hospital.
Ashley wanted to drive herself home, but Betty begged her to come with her.
Ashley agreed.
They both fell asleep in the car.
Zark looked at Ashley’s fair face and hair, wanting to tuck a stray strand behind her ear, but stopped when her eyelashes fluttered.
