Chapter 12
Lila’s smile froze for a second. Then she deliberately sighed, her voice rising a few notches, making sure Noah could hear her. “Oh, Ella? She packed up and went abroad to study for her future. Left Noah all alone.”
The women all froze. Mrs. Smith immediately dropped the heart-shaped decoration she was holding. “Study abroad? So, are they still getting married
or what?”
“We are, why wouldn’t we?”
Lila walked over. “Everyone, keep decorating. Like we talked about, the red silk needs to go upstairs.”
The women exchanged glances. No one moved. Their eyes all darted towards Noah.
Noah was already fuming, and Lila’s words just sent his anger through the roof.
He slammed the door open, his face dark. “Get out! Who told you to decorate this place?”
The women jumped at his roar, dropping the decorations in their hands. They scrambled to pick up their stuff and practically ran for the door.
Lila’s smile instantly crumbled. Her eyes welled up, and tears spilled down her cheeks. “Noah, what is wrong with you? We were supposed to get married! You’re making a total fool out of me…”
Noah almost instinctively reached out to calm her down.
But then a wave of whispers erupted.
“Captain Bennett is such a jerk! Ella barely left, and he’s already hooking up with Lila?”
“Right? And she was Ella’s trainee, for real. What a backstabbing bitch!”
They haven’t even called off the engagement, and she’s already desperate to be the bride. Seriously, no shame!”
Those words stabbed at Noah. He was already pissed off about her leaving, but now he’d been completely humiliated.
There was no way he was gonna let that slide.
He didn’t even spare a glance for the sniveling Lila. He turned, stormed into his study, and slammed the door shut, blocking out all sound.
Lila froze, her tears falling even harder, but she didn’t dare knock on the door again.
She figured Noah was just in a mood. What she didn’t see? Noah was inside the study, leaning against the door, pulling out that letter of breaking engagement from his inner pocket. He stared at it, over and over.
Why the hell did she leave? Was it really for her studies abroad, or did she find out about him and Lila?
Just then, the phone on his desk suddenly rang. It was the hospital.
Noah took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice steady. ‘Hello?’
“Captain Bennett, this is the City Licensing Board. Regarding Ella’s assessment results, we’ve received a report of a major medical malpractice incident involving her. She needs to come in for an interview, or her application may not be approved.”
Noah’s gut clenched. “Who reported her?”
“Sorry, we can’t disclose that. Please let her know.”
He hung up. Noah’s face darkened further.
He’d already pulled strings for Lila to get her through an assessment.
Now, with this report, if it got investigated, he’d be implicated too.
He remembered Lila, crying that day. A sudden doubt crept into his mind.
Noah shot up, grabbed his jacket, and headed out.
Lila heard the commotion and ran in from the living room. “Noah, where are you going? Weren’t we supposed to be talking about the wedding?”
