Chapter 13
Noah got back in his car, started the engine, but had nowhere to go.
He stared out the window. It hit him: when I was there, he’d never even noticed. Now that I was really gone, his world was just empty, pure chaos.
Noah drove aimlessly for what felt like forever, finally pulling over by the river.
The river wind bit at his face, a chilling sting. He pulled out the Letter of Breaking Engagement, laying it next to the note. Watching the river churn, he felt a raw panic swell in him for the very first time.
He’d always thought I’d never leave him. That’s why he’d so carelessly ignored me, and why he’d kept things messy with Lila.
But now he finally understood: some love, once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
–
He closed his eyes. My image filled his mind. My smile, my tears sharp one moment, hazy the next.
Ella, please come back.”
Noah mumbled to himself, his voice lost to the river wind. No one answered.
Suddenly, one of his guys rushed over, face pale with panic. “Captain, Ms. Moore fell. She called the team.”
“What?”
Just hearing Lila’s name again made Noah sick.
He didn’t say a word, just motioned for his subordinate to drive them back.
Inside, Lila heard the car pull up. She immediately put on a pitiful voice. “You’re finally back! My foot hurts so bad.”
He stared at Lila. His voice was calm, but sharp, with an undeniable edge. “Who screwed up that surgery? Was it you or Ella?”
“Noah! What do you mean? Why are you suddenly asking that? Did Ella say something to you?”
Lila’s face drained of color. She stammered, clearly panicked.
Just answer me. Did you lie to me or not?”
Noah just yelled.
“It was Ella! She freaked out, didn’t want to get busted, so she totally threw me under the bus. You don’t believe me?”
You just told me yesterday we’d get married! Are you backing out? Are you still hung up on Ella?”
Lila’s voice broke, tears instantly gushing down her face.
He watched her put on the show, and suddenly, she felt like a complete stranger.
“Someone tipped off the hospital about your rigged evaluation. They’ve already found out. What’s your excuse now?”
“What?! No way! Didn’t you investigate? It was totally Ella…”
“Enough. You made your bed, now lie in it. You’re out of here tomorrow,”
Lila’s face crumpled in disbelief.
But Noah didn’t answer. He just walked straight back into his room, done with her and the whole mess.
No matter how much Lila cried and screamed, he didn’t budge.
Even when the patient died, he’d actually suspected it was me.
But letting Lila take the fall? He couldn’t stomach it.
The Chief of Staff was an old buddy of Noah’s grandpa. Noah knew if he spoke up, the Chief would definitely pull some strings for him.
So he, a guy who always played by the book, begged for her.
And just like that, she passed her assessment.
