Wake Up Leave The Liar novel Chapter 14

Chapter 14

The flight attendant’s soft voice droned on the intercom. I pressed my fingertips to the window, watching the buildings below shrink into tiny specks. A weird, unexplainable feeling hit me.

In

my

last life, I gave up studying abroad for Noah. Everyone else around me found success. Me? I just wasted away, drowning in regret, day after day.

Yeah, I had more than a little regret.

But back then, I always figured as long as Noah didn’t change, we’d still have a good life.

Peaceful, secure. Just cruise through life.

But I never, ever saw that ending coming.

The guy I loved my whole life? He never even cared for me.

I was livid. And full of hate.

Outside, the clouds had a faint golden glow. Sunlight filtered through the glass, warm on my hand, making my nose tingle. But thank God, this time, I chose right.

The frustration from Lila’s false accusations and the patient’s family drama? Poof, gone. Swept away like dust by the plane’s speed. All that was left was pure excitement for my study abroad adventure.

I was totally zoned out when my thermos, sitting next to me, suddenly slid towards the aisle. It was about to hit the floor. But then, a hand, quick as a flash, reached out and caught it. Solid.

“Careful.”

I turned, and my eyes locked with a gentle gaze.

The guy wore a simple white shirt, a textbook in his other hand. He smiled, passing the thermos back. “You heading abroad to study too?”

“How’d you know?”

I was kinda surprised. When I took the cup, my fingertips brushed his hand by accident. I yanked my hand back, feeling my cheeks flush.

He pointed to the admission letter on my lap, a hint of a smile in his eyes. “Caught a glimpse of the school name. I’m actually heading there myself.”

I heard there were only two of us going. Can’t believe it’s such a crazy coincidence!”

My eyes lit up. I’d expected to tackle this trip by myself, but meeting a fellow student? That was a pleasant surprise.

I reached out my hand. I’m Ella Carter. Clinical Medicine.”

“Eli Thompson, Pharmacology.”

He shook my hand, his palm warm and dry. “I saw some office files earlier. You were top of your class in Clinical Medicine, right? That’s impressive.”

His words made me pause, I gave a small, embarrassed laugh. “You knew that? Honestly, it was mostly luck… What about you, though?”

“I was #1 in Pharmacology.”

Eli said it plainly, no hint of bragging at all. He even added, “But I’ve read a few of your papers from your major courses. Your logic and experimental design are super solid, way better than mine.”

Getting praised by another top student? A thrill went through me. My earlier nerves almost completely vanished.

We chatted about what we were looking forward to overseas. I said I’d always wanted to check out the lab equipment abroad, and if there was a chance, hit up some of the nearby museums.

Yeah, I’ve actually been overseas once before, for a conference. A friend even showed me around the campus then.”

Eli seemed to remember something. He pulled a folded map from his bag and spread it out on the small tray table. This is the route I drew last time,” he said. “There’s a pretty well-known bookstore near campus. I can take you to check it out after we get settled.”

Different colored pens marked locations on the map, with simple notes scribbled next to each. You could tell he’d put a lot of thought into it.
