Chapter 15
The sky got dark. Flight attendants started serving dinner.

Eli proactively grabbed a meal for me, even snagging an extra fruit. “Airplane food’s usually not enough,” he said. “If you’re still hungry, I’ve got some
bread.
He pointed to his backpack.
Thanks but I should be good.”
I took the box, staring at the packaged rice. Suddenly, the trip didn’t feel so lonely.
We ate, chatting about our hometowns and what we planned for the future.
I told him I wanted to go into clinical research. Eli, on the other hand, hoped to make a mark in pharmacology. Our paths were different, but the passion? Totally the same.
The flight flew by faster than I thought. Then the cabin announcement came on again: “Prepare for landing.” I watched the city lights sharpen outside the window. My heart pounded with anticipation.
Eli helped me get my bag from the overhead bin. He smiled. “Don’t stress,” he said. “Just follow me. There’s a shuttle from the airport to campus, and I’ve already checked the times.”
Outside the airport, we followed the signs and found the shuttle stop.
While we waited, I watched all the people passing by. It felt a little weird, but knowing Eli was my “guide” made me feel way more at ease.
The shuttle pulled up fast. Eli helped me get my bags on board, and we grabbed two window seats.
“Once we’re at campus,” he said, “we’ll head to the check-in point to register. Then someone will take us to our dorms.”
Eli pulled out his phone, pointing at the map. “Your dorm is in Building 1, pretty close to the lecture halls. I’m in Building 2. You can always come find me if you need anything.”
I listened carefully, jotting down all the important details in my notebook.
The shuttle slowly started moving, the city lights outside the window blurring as we drove. I leaned back against the seat, a wave of calm washing over
Roughly an hour later, the shuttle pulled up to the campus entrance.
They grabbed their bags and got off the bus. The campus was quiet, and the signs were easy to spot.
Eli checked the map, leading me toward the registration point. “The registration desk should still be open,” he said. “We should sign in fast so we don’t
waste time.”
A few staff members were still working at the desk. They greeted us warmly and took our documents.
Eli handed over my acceptance letter and ID. He also reminded me to fill out the dorm check-in form. By the time all the paperwork was done, it was almost ten PM.
Ill walk you to your dorm,” Eli said. “It’s too late for you to be out by yourself.”
Eli picked up my luggage and walked ahead, his steps light.
I followed behind him, watching his back, a wave of gratitude washing over me. “You’ve been such a lifesaver today,” I said. “I would’ve been a total mess without you.”
“Don’t be silly,” Eli said, glancing back with a smile. “We’ll look out for each other here at school. Oh, and there’s a freshman orientation tomorrow morning at nine, in front of the academic building. Don’t be late.”
