Chapter 99
Just as she was about to ask Chase, a knock came. Jake’s voice followed.
“Ashley, I heard you were sick. Are you feeling better?”
Before Ashley could reply, Chase said, “Come in.” The door was ajar.
Jake entered, greeting his brother.”Chase.”
“Mm-hmm.
Jake looked at Ashley. She said, “I’m much better.”
He mumbled, ‘Oh, good.”
She smiled. Haven’t been back in a while?”
Yeah… missed the food. Grandma said you had a fever.”
Emily came upstairs. Seeing Ashley was better, she relaxed. “The soup’s ready. The doctor said you should have some. Should I have Chase bring it up?”
Ashley, with little appetite, felt stuffy and decided to join them downstairs. Jake asked, “Where’s Sam?”
Emily replied,”He ate a little earlier and can’t drink anymore. Perhaps later.”
Ashley sat down, accepting soup from the butler. Chase sat beside her, but a message came through his phone. He subtly turned sideways, replying to the message. Ashley silently drank her soup.
Emily intervened.”Can’t that wait? We’re having soup.”
“Almost done, Chase replied.
Ashley finished her soup quickly.
“Want more?” Emily asked.
Ashley shook her head, standing. “I’m full.” She slightly turned, saw him texting Tanya. They were seemingly discussing a project. He moved further away, likely sensing her observation.
Ashley looked away, picking up a newspaper. Jake brought her cleaned fruit.
“No, thank you,’ she replied.
She noticed Chase leaving the dining room and heading upstairs with his phone in hand. Jake sat beside her, looking at her.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Well, you know, I’m not as smart as you and my brother… I’m stuck on some physics problems…”
Before she could respond, he continued, “I wanted to ask my brother, but he’s busy. He said I could turn to you.”
Ashley took his papers. He was quite capable, and after she explained a couple of concepts, he understood.
“Ashley, you’re amazing! Thank you!” Jake diligently worked on the problems.
Finishing, he said, “Time for my phone!”
Ashley smiled, putting down the newspaper. Feeling better, she was about to get a book when Jake whispered, “Ashley, my idol competed in a race recently. She was amazing! I recorded it. Want to see?”
Ashley’s smile faded.”No, I’m not really interested in racing.”
“Really?” Jake was surprised.”You were watching intently that day. I thought you liked it…”
“I saw some acquaintances there,” she replied.
Seeing her disinterest, he showed her a racing video of his idol, sighing at her absence from future events.
‘I’ll get a book,’ Ashley said.
Jake said, “I know you’re feeling better, but don’t forget to rest.”
“Okay.”
Upstairs, Chase was gone. Ashley found her book on the desk, putting it back to her bag. She used to bring a book with her every time she stayed here, but she couldn’t find any of them. Perhaps they were in Sam’s room.
Ashley went to Sam’s room, finding it unlocked.
She heard Sam’s voice.
