Chapter 140

Ashley was mentally replaying the chess game. Tanya said, “Mr. Lawrence, I’d like to try, but my skills are limited. I don’t think I can beat Chase…”
“It’s okay, I was just joking. Robert chuckled. “If you’re interested, go ahead.”
Before Tanya could say anything, someone quipped, “If Miss Mond plays, it’s really hard to say who will win, haha.”
“Exactly! Even if Mr. Sterling is a skilled chess player, winning against Miss Mond might mean kneeling on durian husks at home later!”
The comment sparked laughter. Robert, unaware of Tanya and Chase’s relationship, noticed Tanya’s striking appearance, confidence, and compatibility with Chase. He chuckled, teasing Chase, “Oh? I’d like to see if you can maintain that composure against your girlfriend.”
Unfazed by the attention, Tanya said to Chase, I’m not a sore loser. Let’s just play a normal game.”
Chase offered a faint smile.”Alright.”
Someone commented, “They haven’t even started, and I’m already sensing the romance in air.”
“Romance aside, Miss Mond is a top-tier PhD graduate. If she says that, she must be good at it.”
Learning this, Robert said, “So, Miss Mond is a PhD? Excellent choice, Mr. Sterling.”
Tim rolled his eyes. He’d been about to ask Ashley if she wanted to play, but Tanya beat him to it. He muttered, “Just play, why all the chatter?”
Though his voice was low, Ashley and Zark heard. Ashley smiled faintly. Zark looked at her composed, unfazed expression, feeling reassured.
The game began. Ashley recognized Tanya’s level. She was not a beginner but…
After a while, Ashley stopped watching. Tim rolled his eyes again, feeling restless. Noticing Ashley’s lack of interest, he asked, “Shall we go back to the veranda and have some refreshments?”
Ashley shook her head.”No, let’s wait.”
Zark had noticed Ashley’s shift in focus before Tim. During Chase and Robert’s game, she’d been entirely absorbed. Now, she’d only watched for short time before losing interest, despite the close match between Chase and Tanya. Tanya’s skills were inferior to Robert’s, let alone Chase’s. Ashley’s
a
reaction…
“She’s quite good,” Vincent’s voice cut through the air. He and Matt stood beside Robert.
Robert agreed.”Indeed.” Then, he turned to Vincent.”Why are you here instead of painting?”
I didn’t want you to complain about me ignoring you.”
Screw you. Don’t interrupt the game.”
But Vincent remained. The Monds and Holdens were pleased by the praise for Tanya. Many admired and envied her beauty, qualifications, and now, her chess skills. Her charm had also benefited the Holdens and Monds. Everyone wanted a daughter like her.
Someone exclaimed, Mr and Mrs. Mond, you’ve raised a wonderful daughter.”
Others chimed in, asking for advice on raising such an accomplished girl.
The Monds and Holdens were surrounded by other wealthy ladies. Ruby, proud of Tanya, glanced at Ashley. She whispered to Vivian, “Compared to Tanya, she’s just a footnote,”
Vivian’s cold expression showed her displeasure at the comparison. The Monds and Holdens also looked at Ashley. Tanya was superior in every way. They turned back to Tanya, their faces softened with pride.
Tanya stood up.”I lost.”
Robert smiled kindly. “Even in defeat, you were excellent. Mr. Sterling is too great. A young woman with your intellect and chess skills is rare.”
Tanya smiled. Thank you for saying that.”
