Chapter 147

A short while later, Tanya and Jeffery emerged from the restroom. Sam, brimming with childish curiosity, pointed at everything that caught his eye, chattering incessantly to Tanya, who responded with unwavering smiles.
Jeffery observed, impressed by Tanya’s dedication to Chase’s child, and silently acknowledging the challenges of parenthood.
Back at the coffee shop, Jeffery’s gaze immediately went to Chase, who was leisurely sipping coffee while flipping through a magazine. He was acting like an 100% hands-off dad. Jeffery paused, slightly surprised.
Earlier, on their way to the restroom, Jeffery had mentioned meeting a friend at the cafe. Once inside, Tanya asked, “Did your friend come?”
Jeffery shook his head.”Not yet.”
“Why don’t you join us?”
“You’re on a date. It might be awkward.”
Tanya laughed. “It’s fine, Chase won’t mind.”
Jeffery joined them, heading towards Chase’s table. The first thing he noticed was a vibrant bouquet of red roses next to Chase. They were undoubtedly for Tanya. It seemed Chase was more romantic than he’d initially assumed.
“Daddy, we’re back!”
Sam announced, promptly settling back into his seat.
Chase responded, glancing at Tanya, then noticing Jeffery.”Mr. Cooper?”
Jeffery said, “I bumped into Miss Mond at the entrance, so I came to say hello.”
After a brief handshake and pleasantries, Jeffery, seeing their comfortable interaction, decided not to stay.”My friend should be here soon. I’ll leave you
to it. See you next time.”
Chase didn’t ask him to stay.”Okay.”
Jeffery gave Tanya another look before leaving. He went to a nearby empty seat. He couldn’t hear their conversation, because they weren’t speaking loudly.
Twenty minutes later, Chase and Tanya prepared to leave. Before they did, he approached Jeffery.
Jeffery asked,”Are you guys leaving?”
Right, Chase said.”See you next time.”
Seeing Tanya and Sam still there, Jeffery asked, “What are you…”
Tanya smiled. Chase’s getting the car from the underground parking lot.”
The cafe was close to the street, but the underground parking lot was expansive. It was really thoughtful of Chase to do that.
Jeffery smiled. Tanya asked him, “Did your friend show up?”
Jeffery shook his head. “No.”
Tanya lowered her eyes. She seemed to know something, but she didn’t comment.”Are you gonna keep waiting?”
Jeffery said, “No.”
After a short conversation, Chase called Tanya.
Tanya said, “We should go.”
‘Okay.”
As they were saying goodbye outside the cafe, Sam suddenly pulled away from Tanya’s hand, looking sideways.
“Sam?”
Sam thought he saw Ashley this time, but the crowd was too dense and he was too short to see clearly. He said to Tanya, “Aunt Tanya, I think I really
saw
Tanya interrupted him. Your father is waiting for us. Let’s go.”
Sam glanced around but failed to find Ashley again. Then, he left with Tanya.
Watching their backs, Jeffery was about to leave. Then he saw Ashley standing nearby. He hesitated.
He had planned to ignore her, but her gaze was on Tanya and Sam. Her expression was cold, almost hateful towards Tanya. Jeffery was convinced Ashley was still holding a grudge and that she might even harm Tanya.
He walked to her.
–
Ashley was carrying several items two potted plants and some home décor. She’d bought the décor on impulse, trying to spruce up her recently acquired apartment which was still quite sparsely furnished.
She hadn’t expected to encounter Tanya and Sam. After they left, as she was preparing to leave, she saw Jeffery walking to her. He asked, “What do you
intend to do?”
Ashley stopped. “What do you mean?”
Jeffery said, She doesn’t give a damn about you. You’re insignificant to her. Don’t you find it funny that you still hate her?”
