Chapter 148
Chase and Sam had just returned to the villa when Chase’s phone rang. He answered. After a moment, he hung up, putting his jacket back on. He turned to Sam, who was heading upstairs. “Your great-grandmother had a fall. I’m going to the hospital now. Have an early night.”
Sam worriedly said, “I want to go with you…”
You have school tomorrow. I’ll take you to see her after school.”
“Okay…”
Chase left.
Sam’s phone buzzed. He checked it; it was spam. He pouted. On the way back, he’d called his mother, wanting to know if the woman she’d seen at the mall was her. But she didn’t answer. He’d hoped this was a message from her.
But… if his mother had had time to shop on Christmas, she would have taken him along. He must have had the wrong person.
An hour later, at the hospital.
Chase had already spoken to the doctor. Emily had a fractured femur and needed surgery to get a new one. The surgery couldn’t happen today; they needed to monitor her condition. The rest of the Sterling family was out of town. Besides Chase, only Emily’s housekeeper and caretaker were at the hospital. The housekeeper had contacted everyone else.
Seeing Chase, the housekeeper rushed to greet him. Emily, who was lying on bed, closed her eyes and ignored him.
Chase pulled up a chair and sat beside her.”Still mad at me?”
He was referring to the project he’d recently approved for the Mond and Holden families at Sterling Corporation. Since then, Emily had refused to answer his calls.
Emily remained silent.
Chase paused.”What do you want me to do?”
Emily finally opened her eyes. “Don’t you know?”
Chase did. He said flatly, “I know. I’ll have it handled tomorrow.” It meant he would remove the Mond and Holden families from Sterling Corporation and reclaim the project.
“And?”
Chase knew what she meant. He frowned.”Grandma…”
Emily closed her eyes again. Chase said nothing more.
After a while, Emily said, “Off you go.”
Chase didn’t leave. He adjusted her blanket.
A while later, the doctor came to update him on Emily’s condition; the surgery could be scheduled for the day after tomorrow. It was relatively low-risk; she’d likely be walking with a walker a month.
After the doctor left, looking at Emily’s back, the housekeeper said in the hallway, “She really wants to see Ms. Jones, but she won’t let me call her…”
Emily felt she owed Ashley and didn’t want to bother her because of her injury.
Chase said, “I understand.”
The housekeeper said nothing more and went back into the ward.
That night, Chase stayed at the hospital. The next morning, Chase’s mother, Linda, and others arrived. Knowing he’d stayed up all night, they urged him
to rest.
Chase told his grandmother, “I’ll see you tonight.”
Emily ignored him.
Chase left the hospital and made a phone call.
Over an hour later, the Monds and Holdens received news of their removal from the project. They immediately contacted Tanya.
Tanya said, “It’s Emily’s wish. She got injured last night…”
Mera
The Holdens and Lins were shocked. Jay said, “So… isn’t Emily using this as an opportunity to make Chase break up with you and prevent him from divorcing Ashley?”
Tanya pursed her lips.
After another brief conversation, she hung up.
A knock came. “Miss Mond, the meeting is about to begin.”
“Okay.”
Tanya put down her phone, leaving her office. Heading towards the conference room, she saw Ashley talking to George. Though she knew the collaboration between Speed and Eternal was ongoing and that Eternal technicians needed to come frequently for system maintenance, she hadn’t expected to see Ashley.
Ashley noticed someone looking at her. Seeing it was Tanya, she immediately looked away.
