Chapter 17
Noah’s fingers rapped sharply on the door. He knocked several times, hard, but still, no one answered.
“Secretary, it’s Noah. I wanted to brief you again about my leave to Switzerland.”
He waited half a minute. Just as his fingers were about to knock again, a subordinate’s voice came from behind him. “Captain Bennett, don’t bother knocking.
Noah turned around, frowning. The Secretary isn’t back yet?”
The subordinate’s fingers tightened on the folder. He wouldn’t meet Noah’s eyes. “No… actually… the squad received an anonymous complaint. So we can’t approve your leave at the moment.”
“A complaint?”
Noah’s voice shot up. “Wasn’t that all cleared up last week? We had all the proof Lila framed me. How is this still a thing?”
“Captain Bennett, that letter isn’t about Lila.”
The subordinate’s voice dropped even lower. “It’s about you, sir. It claims you abused your power, covering up her mistakes. The team needs you to stay here and cooperate with the investigation. You can’t leave.”
Noah’s eyes narrowed, his knuckles white. “Who reported me?”
The subordinate hesitated for a few seconds before finally speaking in a low voice. “I had someone look into it, and it was… Lila.”
Lila!” Noah’s voice was laced with ice. He turned and stormed downstairs. “Get the car ready! We’re going to her place!”
Half an hour later, Noah’s car pulled up in front of Lila’s rented building.
He looked at the slightly messy yard, a frown creasing his brow.
Ever since he’d kicked her out, Lila had been forced to rent a place here.
He slammed the car door open, took the stairs two at a time, and pounded on the door. From inside, Lila’s panicked voice called out, “Who is it?”
Noah.”
The noise inside stopped dead. After a beat, the door barely cracked open.
Lila opened the door, saw the thunder on Noah’s face, and her eyes instantly darted away. “What are you doing here?”
Noah shoved the door open, stalked inside, and slammed it shut behind him. His voice was ice-cold. “You wrote the report?”
“What report? What are you talking about? I don’t understand…”
You don’t understand?”
Noah took a step closer. His imposing figure towered over her, casting her in shadow.
“You reported me for abusing my power. How long are you going to play dumb?”
Lila’s face instantly went white, her lips trembling. “I didn’t… It really wasn’t me…”
“Not you?” Noah’s eyes were full of scorn. “Fine. I’m calling the Security Office right now. They’ll haul you in, lock you up. You can get a taste of being falsely accused, of having your freedom taken away. How does that sound?”
“No!” Lila shrieked, her legs going weak, almost buckling. “It was me! I wrote it! Please, don’t make me go to the Security Office!”
Noah stared her down, his voice devoid of warmth. “Why?”
Lila’s tears suddenly gushed out, her voice thick with sobs and resentment. “You said you’d marry me, but you kept putting it off! You totally regretted it! I bet you’re just obsessed with me!”
She wiped away her tears, her voice suddenly turning shrill. “And now what? I got fired for falsely accusing you. My job’s gone, my reputation’s ruined. I have nothing left! Since I’m miserable, none of you will have it easy! If I go down, I’m taking you all with me!”
Noah stared at her twisted face. A wave of sickening disgust washed over him.
