Chapter 18
“Say that again!” Noah’s rage ignited, a furious inferno. He lashed out, slapping her hard across the face.
A sharp crack. Lila crumpled to the ground, clutching her face. Tears and blood from her nose streamed down.
She saw the murderous look in Noah’s eyes and trembled, but kept sobbing, “I didn’t do anything wrong… You guys wronged me…”
Noah took a deep breath, forcing down the rage in his eyes. He ordered a subordinate nearby, “Get two people over here NOW. Take Lila back, lock her up. She stays in holding until the investigation is complete. Then we’ll deal with her.”
Done with that, he didn’t even spare Lila a glance on the floor. He turned, yanked open the door, and strode out.
Noah headed straight for his office and packed a small bag.
He didn’t care if the team approved or not; he had to find me. I was alone in a foreign country, facing threats from the patient’s family. He couldn’t let ” anything happen to me.
He’d just gotten downstairs, bag in hand, when he saw a subordinate rushing toward him. “Captain Bennett! Wait up!”
Noah stopped. His face was still grim. “Now what?”
The Secretary is back,” the subordinate panted, “and he wants to see you in his office, now.”
Noah frowned. He dropped his bags and turned toward the Secretary’s office. He knew he was in for a major scolding, but he was ready. Even if it meant disciplinary action, he had to find Ella.
He pushed open the Secretary’s office door. The Secretary sat behind his desk, looking serious as he read some files.
When he saw Noah enter, he finally put down the papers. He gestured to the chair across from him. “Sit.”
Noah sat down as instructed. Before the Secretary could even open his mouth, Noah spoke. “I know you wanted to see me about my leave request and the anonymous letter. I’ll cooperate with the investigation regarding the letter, but I have to go. Ella is in danger overseas. I can’t just leave her.”
You have to go?”
The Secretary’s voice sharply rose. “Noah, do you even know what you’re saying? My case? The hospital already has the results. What you need to do now is cooperate with the investigation, not just leave the country without permission! You’re in a leadership position, you need to follow protocol!”
I get the discipline, but Ella is the woman I love. She’s in danger right now. I can’t just stand by and watch her get hurt.”
Noah’s voice was firm.
Your woman?”
The Secretary scoffed. “Noah, don’t you dare forget your position! You’re a government official, not some regular Joe! You think this is protecting her? But you were the one who called her a killer originally! And while this new complaint might be overblown, you absolutely showed bias when it came to Lila and what happened to me!”
“I didn’t cover for Lila! She lied to me!” Noah shot back instantly. “I was framed! All the evidence proves I’m innocent!”
“Evidence” the Secretary challenged. “Yeah, the evidence might clear your name. But when you handled that whole mess, did you really stay completely impartial? Or did your personal feelings mess with your judgment?”
The Secretary stared him down. “Noah, you’ve really disappointed me. You think you’re protecting her, but you’re actually just hurting her, and yourself! Do you really want to make these charges stick?”
Noah opened his mouth, wanting to argue back, but realized he had nothing to say.
He had to admit it. When it came to her, he’d been too impulsive, too worried. He probably hadn’t thought it all the way through.
*Alright, listen up. The team’s already decided. You’re getting a formal reprimand. Your duties? Suspended. You will cooperate with the investigation.”
The Secretary’s tone softened.
‘Noah, I get it. This sucks. But you gotta understand, discipline is discipline. No exceptions. Go home, think things over. We’ll figure out next steps the investigation.”
after
Noah dropped his gaze. His hands clenched into tight fists, nails digging hard into his palms.
The Secretary was right. He knew it. Leaving now? Would only screw things up even more.
“Got it.”
Noah’s voice was rough, almost a whisper. “I’ll cooperate.”
Mere
The Secretary watched him, a soft sigh escaping. “Don’t get too down on yourself. This’ll all get sorted out. Your personal stuff? Not my business. But I can greenlight some leave for you once the investigation’s done.”
Noah nodded. Stood. Turned and walked out of the Secretary’s office.
