Chapter 20
Mang
I hesitated for a few seconds, then looked up at Eli. On an impulse, I asked, “What if I told you I’ve lived this life before? Would you believe me?”
The words were barely out before I regretted them. It sounded so wild, I was about to brush it off as a joke. But Eli didn’t flinch, no surprise or doubt in his eyes. He just gave a small nod, his voice steady. Tll listen,” he said. “Whether it’s truly a second life, or some fantasy love story you cooked up, I’
hear it.”
Under the streetlight, his face was illuminated, his eyes behind his glasses open, kind. No judgment, no sarcasm.
My shoulders dropped, the tension draining out of me. All those words, bottled up for so long, suddenly just poured out.
“He and I were childhood sweethearts. Knew each other forever, dated for years.”
My voice was barely a whisper, like I was telling someone else’s story.
“I thought we were madly in love. He remembered all my favorite things, would take me to the ER when I was sick. I even planned our whole married life. Turns out, he’d loved someone else the entire time. I was just his cover, a shield so no one would talk.’
But he never told me any of this.”
I paused, swallowing hard. ‘After that, I broke it off with him, moved here, and we never talked again.”
Once I’d said it all, I suddenly felt a huge weight lift off my chest, like a rock I’d been carrying forever was finally gone.
Eli didn’t interrupt me. He waited until I was done, then spoke softly. “Ella, this isn’t your fault.”
He looked me in the eyes, his voice serious. “You didn’t do anything wrong. He’s the one who messed up, clearly not loving you but wasting your time. Missing out on someone who didn’t love you back isn’t a loss, it’s a blessing. Now you have the chance to meet someone who truly values you.*
A soft evening breeze drifted by. As I met Eli’s honest eyes, a tightly wound knot in my heart suddenly softened.
In my past life, I’d never heard words like that. Everyone just told me to ‘hang in there’ or ‘he’s probably just confused right now.”
We’d been together so long, practically an old married couple. No need to air our dirty laundry for everyone to see.
It wouldn’t look good for either of us. And in the end, I almost wasted away from pure heartache.
But now Eli told me I wasn’t wrong. He said I was lucky to have missed out on Noah.
I suddenly smiled. Thank you, Eli.”
“No problem.” Eli smiled back, pointing at the dorm entrance. “Go on up. You’ve got the library tomorrow.”
