Chapter 198
In the private room of the restaurant, Zark poured Ashley a glass of water.”Did you find the exchange sessions helpful?
Mem
“Sort of,” she replied. She’d attended to spark inspiration for her research on the material Burke had given her and Tim. The good news was that she had found some promising new leads.
Ashley asked, “How is Betty doing?”
“She’s been getting much better since last fall. She started school again this year and is now making new friends at school. I think she’s happy both at school and at home.”
Zark looked at her. “She mentions you all the time. Maybe we could have dinner together again sometime.”
Ashley nodded. Sounds great.”
After catching up on personal matters, they shifted to work. Zark discussed his collaboration with Steve. The conversation flowed smoothly, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Before, when Zark used Betty as an excuse to meet Ashley, she’d largely ignored him. Now, though Betty was absent, they could converse normally. Zark saw that Ashley was letting go of past grievances and slowly accepting him. It wasn’t a romantic acceptance, nor could they be called friends yet, but it meant a lot.
After dinner, they parted ways.
Ashley hadn’t bought many clothes in the past few months due to her busy work schedule. The season was changing, and there wasn’t much to wear in her wardrobe.
On Saturday, Ashley went shopping. After trying on clothes for over an hour and picking out some items for her family, she sat on a sofa and waited for paying the bills.
A voice called out,”Ashley?”
Ashley turned and saw Jane standing at the entrance. Jane was Yonnie’s daughter, only a few months younger than her. They’d been close as children, but things changed after Ashley’s parents divorced. Their last meeting was about four years ago. Back then, before Chase met Tanya, Jane had secretly given Ashley all the hundred thousand dollars she had saved after hearing about Steve’s financial difficulties.
Ashley smiled. “It’s been a while, Jane.”
“Yeah,” Jane replied, her voice tinged with worry.”Ashley, are you… are you okay?” She had heard about the situation between Ashley, Tanya, and Chase. It wasn’t even a love triangle because Chase never seemed to love Ashley back.
Jane was well aware of Tanya’s allure; she’d witnessed countless men captivated by her. Even her high school crush had only been with her to get closer to Tanya. Tanya was undeniably brilliant and charming.
Jane could tell what Ashley had been through. The man she loved most was taken from her by another woman whose mother had been her father’s affair.
Ashley understood Jane’s concern. She was about to reassure her when Yonnie showed up. Seeing Jane, she scolded, “What’s your problem? I’ve been looking for you! Why aren’t you answering your phone…”
Her voice stopped as she saw Ashley, her face hardening.
A sales associate came to Ashley.”Ms. Jones, your purchases are ready. That’ll be 5,897,644 bucks. Please check it out.”
Ashley nodded, taking the receipt. The numerous shopping bags, filled with her purchases from the LV store, covered the floor. Ashley checked the bill and then paid it.
Yonnie and Jane were stunned, Ashley had spent nearly six million on clothes?
Yonnie believed Ashley was just trying to appear well-off to avoid showing vulnerability. Without Chase’s support, even Tanya wouldn’t spend this much on clothes. The Joneses were struggling financially, and Ashley was just an employee in a technology company. How could she be so extravagant?
Jane, however, was worried. She’d heard that while Jones Group hadn’t gone bankrupt, it wasn’t doing well. Spending millions on clothes didn’t seem
very wise…
Yonnie scoffed but said nothing. She turned to Jane, saying, “Dinner is ready. Don’t keep them waiting, understand? Let’s go!”
Jane nodded at Ashley before hurrying to catch up with Yonnie.
