Without looking back, Ashley turned to leave. Chase moved to stop her, but his phone rang. He checked the caller ID, paused, and watched Ashley get into her car before answering the call.

Seeing Chase let Ashley go, Tim snorted, then got into the car with her.

Tim hadn’t understood what was happening. In the car, he asked, “Where did he want you to go?”

Ashley told him about Emily’s upcoming birthday. It was a bit of a surprise to Tim. While the Reed and Sterling families weren’t close, Emily’s lavish birthday celebration must have invited them. However, Tim rarely visited his family and had been unaware.

“You did the right thing,” Tim said with a frown. “Didn’t he take Tanya to meet his family? He’ll probably bring her to Emily birthday party, too. Why invite you? Wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t go?”

Ashley had considered that. She figured she and Chase would never have anything to do with each other again; she wasn’t concerned about his relationship with Tanya. She found it illogical but she didn’t care.

Tim added, “Perhaps his family doesn’t like Tanya. He knows that Emily likes you, and he thinks Emily will accept Tanya if you let her?”

Ashley thought it made sense. Maybe.”

Tim scoffed.”No wonder he came here to find you. He’s playing a clever game.”

Ashley remained silent, focusing on driving.

Chase ended the call after a brief conversation. Jeffery hadn’t left. After Chase hung up, he asked, “Miss Mond?”

Chase smiled.”Yes.” He pocketed his phone. “Mr. Cooper, are you free? Care to join me for dinner?”

Jeffery didn’t expect him to say that. He thought for a while and then agreed. “Sure.”

Half an hour later, they were at a restaurant.

Chase said, “I heard from Mr. Mond yesterday that you promised to discuss the new project with him in two days.”

Jeffery immediately realized “Mr. Mond” referred to Tanya’s father. He’d heard Chase was close to the Monds, but he hadn’t expected him to know so

much.
