Chapter 7
“Forget it. The letter from Mom probably just contains that nagging stuff again-not worth reading.” Sam said this as he casually tossed the envelope
into the trash bin.
It was the middle of the night. Ashley was asleep. Then, she was jarred awake by an incoming call from Her son. Half-asleep, she saw the caller ID and was just about to answer when Sam suddenly hung up.
Though Ashley had relinquished custody in the divorce papers, Sam was still her son, and she felt responsible.
Seeing the missed call and fearing something had happened to him, she called back.
Sam turned away, refusing to answer. Growing more concerned, Ashley called the villa’s landline.
Maria answered quickly.
After Ashley explained, she said, “Sam’s probably fine. He went to bed late last night and overslept. He was still asleep when I went upstairs. I’ll check on him and call you back.”
Ashley relaxed. “Thank you.”
When Maria reached Sam’s room, Sam was already in the bathroom.
After Maria explained the situation, Sam lied while rinsing his mouth, “I dialed the wrong number.”
Maria bought it and went downstairs to call Ashley back. Sam scoffed, feeling slightly better.
Ashley, however, couldn’t get back to sleep after being jolted awake.
She felt tired at work the next day.
Chase had never gotten around to opening the envelope with the divorce papers since taking Tanya’s call.
On the day of their return, Chase put the last file in his briefcase, checked everything, and went downstairs.
Let’s go.”
The Lincoln limousine left the villa for the airport.
Ashley didn’t know about Chase’s return.
No one told her.
It had been two weeks since she’d moved out.
She was starting to enjoy the peace and quiet of living alone.
It was a weekend, and she slept in,
After showering, she opened the curtains to bright sunshine.
She stretched, watered her plants, and was about to make breakfast when the doorbell rang.
It was Mrs. White, her neighbor.
“Miss Jones, I didn’t disturb you, did I?”
Ashley smiled warmly. “No, I was already awake.”
“Glad to hear it!” Mrs. White said warmly, holding out a container.
These are steamed buns and dumplings we made fresh this morning. I brought you some to try.”
“Thank you, that’s… very kind of you.”
“It’s the least we could do. If it weren’t for you saving Kelly from that rabid dog the other day… we don’t even want to think about what would’ve happened. We’ve been meaning to thank you properly, but we’ve been so busy…”
“It was nothing, Mrs. White. You’re too kind.”
After a brief chat, Mrs. White left.
Ashley went back inside, ate her breakfast while studying the algorithmic mechanisms of an Al she had been researching recently. In the afternoon, a news notification popped up about PA University’s centennial celebration.
Ashley paused, checked the date, and realized today was indeed the university’s anniversary.
She looked online and saw multiple trending topics: #PA University Centennial Celebration.
The high level of attention was due to PA University’s prestige and this being its first centennial celebration. Many distinguished alumni were invited.
Ashley looked at the photos of several familiar faces on the screen. Her hands trembled as memories of her university days flooded back. Her heart
ached.
If she hadn’t gotten married right after graduation, she might have been among the honored alumni attending the ceremony.
Ashley closed her laptop. After hesitating, she drove to PA University. It was late afternoon. Many guests had already left, but the campus was still bustling.
