Chapter 6
After work, Ashley went to the market, bought some groceries and several potted plants, then went home. After dinner, she checked online for information about the upcoming tech expo.
Then she made a call.
“Reserve a ticket for me for next month’s tech expo.”
“Are you sure? the person on the other end said coolly.
“You said the same thing last time, and the time before, and you never showed up. So many people would kill for those tickets, and you wasted them.”
The annual tech expo was a major event, and tickets weren’t easy to get.
Her former company had several exhibition slots, and many employees wanted to attend. Each slot was incredibly valuable.
“If I don’t show up this time, I won’t ask again.”
The line went silent, then the call ended.
Ashley knew it was a yes.
She smiled. She hadn’t mentioned her real reason-she wanted to return to the company.
As a business partner of the company, she had chosen marriage and childbirth when the company was just starting out.
She faded out of the company, focusing solely on family, completely disrupting their company’s development plans and causing them to miss
numerous opportunities.
Everyone was both furious and frustrated with her.
In recent years, they had essentially ceased contact.
It was true she wanted to return to the company, but her focus since marriage had consistently been on her family.
She’d been out of the loop for too long and was worried she wouldn’t be able to keep up.
Therefore, she planned to take some time to thoroughly understand the current state of the industry before making concrete plans.
For the next few days, Ashley would apply herself fully to her work during office hours, and focus on her own matters after work. She did not proactively contact Chase or Sam.
They didn’t contact her either, which wasn’t surprising. As far back as over half a year ago, contacting them had already become her one-sided
arrangement.
They were merely passively accepting it.
In LA, Sam had developed a habit of calling Tanya first thing every morning.
This morning, he did the same, but the call ended in tears.
“Aunt Tanya’s going home!”
Sam was heartbroken. After hanging up, he immediately called Chase.
“Daddy, did you know that?”
Chase, in his office, was reviewing documents.”Yes.”
“When did you find out?”
‘A while ago.”
“Daddy, you’re mean… Sam sobbed, clutching his stuffed pig.
“Why didn’t you tell me? I don’t want to part with Aunt Tanya! I want to go back with her!”
Chase’s voice was calm. “It’s being handled.”
Sam didn’t understand. “What do you mean?”
“We’re going back next week.”
Sam jumped out of bed. “Really?!”
‘Yes.’
“Then why didn’t Aunt Tanya tell me?”
Things just got finalized, I haven’t told her yet.”
Sam was ecstatic. “Daddy, don’t tell Aunt Tanya! Let’s surprise her when we get back!”
“Okay.”
You’re the best! I love you!”
After hanging up, Sam was overjoyed, singing and dancing.
Then, he thought of his mom.
These past few days, his mood had been fantastic because she hadn’t called.
To avoid those calls, he’d been leaving early, putting his phone far away, or turning it off.
After two days, worried his mother would be angry, he stopped doing so.
