Chapter 5

Alex was one of Chase’s closest assistants. Seeing her resignation letter, he was very surprised. He was one of the few in the company who knew about Ashley and Chase’s relationship. Those familiar with Chase knew his heart wasn’t with Ashley. After the wedding, he’d been distant and rarely came

home.

Ashley had joined Sterling Corporation to get closer to Chase. Her initial goal was to become his personal assistant. But Chase refused. Even his grandpa couldn’t change his mind. Ultimately, Ashley settled for a position in the general secretarial pool.

At first, Alex worried Ashley might cause chaos. But the result surprised him. While she used her position to be near Chase, she picked her moments and never went too far. Perhaps to impress Chase, Ashley worked diligently, proving herself exceptionally capable. Regardless of pregnancy, childbirth, or other life events, she always followed company policy, never seeking special treatment. Within a few years, she’d become head of the secretarial department.

Alex had witnessed Ashley’s feelings for Chase. Honestly, he never expected her to quit. He couldn’t believe she’d actually resign. This probably meant something happened between her and Chase that he didn’t know about, and Chase had ordered her to leave.

Ashley was a strong employee. Though it was a shame, Alex handled it professionally.”I’ll accept the resignation letter and arrange for your replacement as soon as possible.”

Okay, Ashley replied, returning to her desk.

Later, Alex gave Chase a work update.

“Oh. Mr. Sterling, regarding-“Although he told Ashley he would arrange her replacement promptly, when exactly she should leave was something he wanted to ascertain from Chase. If Chase wanted Ashley gone tomorrow, he’d make the arrangements.

But the words died on his lips as he recalled that when Ashley had first joined, Chase had explicitly stated that all matters concerning Ashley in the company should be dealt with strictly according to company policies; there was no need to report them to him specifically. He wouldn’t get involved. And indeed, that was how it had been all along. Over the years, within the company, Chase had never proactively inquired about Ashley’s affairs. When he saw her at work, it was always with the complete detachment of viewing a stranger.

Over the years, Ashley’s performance was outstanding. A couple of years ago, before they planned to promote her, they deliberately mentioned it in front of Chase precisely because of their awareness of his dislike for her. The implication was that if he disapproved, they would drop the matter. At the time, Chase had frowned upon hearing it and reiterated impatiently that he wouldn’t interfere; they should proceed strictly according to the regulations. He told them never to bother him about Ashley’s company affairs again.

Seeing Alex hesitate, Chase frowned.”What is it?”

Jay recovered.”Nothing, Boss.”

Since Chase knew about the resignation but hadn’t mentioned it, it clearly wasn’t important to him. Alex decided to handle it as usual.

He said nothing more.

Chase ended the video call.

“What are you thinking about?” a colleague asked, tapping Ashley’s shoulder.

Ashley smiled and shook her head.”Nothing.”
