Chapter 4
Ashley disembarked the plane and, upon arriving home, went directly upstairs to pack.
Six years’ worth of belongings filled the house. But she only took a few outfits, toiletries, and some of her professional books.
After their marriage, Chase had deposited living expenses into two separate accounts each month-One for her, and one for Sam.
Ashley, however, had always used her own account for daily spending. She had never touched the card meant for their son.
Moreover, she had loved Chase.
Whenever she went shopping and saw clothes, shoes, cufflinks, or ties that suited him, she couldn’t resist buying them.
As for herself, her job didn’t require high daily spending, and she prioritized her husband and son, wanting only the best for them.
Consequently, most of the living expenses Chase provided were spent on the father-son pair.
Given this pattern, her account should have been nearly depleted. However, over the past year or so, Sam had mostly lived in LA with Chase, and she had far fewer opportunities to buy things for them. So, surprisingly, more than thirty million bucks still remained in her account now.
A pittance to Chase, but a significant sum for her. Since it was rightfully hers, Ashley transferred it out without hesitation.
Leaving both cards behind, she walked out pulling her suitcase without a backward glance.
She owned a small apartment, a hundred square meters, near her office.
Four years ago, she’d bought it to help a friend who’d been struggling at work; she’d never lived there.
Now it served its purpose. It had been regularly cleaned.
A quick tidying up was all it needed to be livable.
Exhausted, Ashley went to bed around ten.
BEEP BEEP BEEP!”
A jarring alarm ripped through her sleep.
Her mind blanked for a moment.
Then she realized it was around 7:30 AM in LA, where Chase and Sam were.
They usually had breakfast then. Since Sam had moved to LA, he would often call her at this time.
She’d set the alarm to avoid missing their calls, as her work left her tired and wanting to sleep early.
At first, when Sam went to LA, he was unaccustomed and missed her terribly, constantly wanting to call.
But as his stay grew longer, the calls changed.
What began as clinging affection and longing turned into responses that were perfunctory and impatient. This alarm had, in truth, become unnecessary long ago. She was the one who couldn’t bear to let go.
A bitter smile touched her lips. After some hesitation, Ashley deleted the alarm and turned off her phone, going back to sleep.
Meanwhile, Chase and Sam were finishing breakfast. Although Chase knew Ashley basically called their son at this time every day, he wasn’t always home himself and hadn’t paid much attention to the routine. He noticed she hadn’t called today, but it didn’t concern him. After finishing breakfast, he went upstairs to change.
Sam felt Ashley was becoming increasingly naggy and found himself less and less willing to talk on the phone with her. Seeing that the call hadn’t come, he figured Ashley might be busy. His eyes lit up, and he grabbed his backpack, running towards the door.
