Chapter 9
The next day, Ashley bumped into Chase at the office. She didn’t know he and Sam were back. She froze. Chase showed a flicker of surprise but assumed she’d just returned from a trip. He treated her like a stranger, coldly passing her to enter the office.
Before, seeing him would have thrilled her. Even if she couldn’t hug him, she’d greet this cold man excitedly with her eyes shining. But now, she merely glanced at his handsome face, then lowered her eyes, her usual excitement gone. He left without noticing.
Watching his back, she wondered when he’d returned. Now that he was back, the divorce should be soon, right? Determined, she focused on work.
Thirty minutes later, Alex called, “Get two coffees for Mr. Sterling.”
She’d once spent countless hours perfecting her coffee-making skills to impress Chase. Then, Chase completely fell for her coffee so that he wouldn’t have anyone else’s coffee. She’d thought it was a breakthrough, but she’d underestimated his aversion to her.
He liked her coffee, but that was it. He remained distant. Usually, he would ask Alex to bring him the coffee. Only when Alex was busy did she get to deliver it herself.
This time, Alex told her to get Chase the coffee.
She took the tray to his office.
The door was open.
As she was about to knock, she saw Tanya sitting on Chase’s lap, kissing him.
Ashley froze, her face draining of color. Tanya jumped off. Chase’s face was grim.”Who let you in?!”
Ashley clutched the tray.”I brought you coffee.”
Ashley,” another assistant, Justin, arrived. He knew about her and Chase.”This is pointless.”
She understood. Justin thought she knew Tanya was here and that she came to disrupt them… Chase seemed to think so too. In the past, she might have done that, but things had changed. Sadly, they wouldn’t give her a chance to explain.
Justin coldly said, “Leave now!”
Ashley’s eyes welled up. Her hands trembled. Coffee spilled, burning her fingers. She didn’t cry out but turned to leave.
“Don’t come back,” Chase called from his office. She’d already resigned. She’d leave after her replacement was found. But no one cared, and saying anything was pointless.
Before leaving, she heard Tanya soothing Chase.
“Don’t be mad, she didn’t mean to…”
Ashley dumped the coffee, rinsed her burn, and applied ointment.
She was a great cook and barista now, but she knew nothing of this before she married Chase. She’d learned everything for him and Sam. Only she knew how hard it had been. That was why she always carried ointment. But since Sam left with Chase, she seldom needed it.
She went back to work. She’d just finished some documents when she heard someone speak.
“Mr. Sterling’s girlfriend is here!”
‘Girlfriend? Who is she? Is she pretty?”
‘No idea. But she’s from a wealthy family, and she looks super pretty and classy!”
