Chapter 10
Ashley’s colleagues hid behind the wall, watching Tanya. Tanya coldly ignored Ashley and entered the elevator.
That’s Mr. Sterling’s girlfriend, right? Wow, so pretty! There is not a thing on her that is not fancy!”
They asked Ashley, “What do you think?”
Ashley said calmly, “Yes.”
Tanya was her father’s illegitimate daughter. When Ashley was eight, her father divorced her mother to marry Tanya’s mother. Ashley lived with her mentally unstable mother and uncle. Her uncle’s business declined, while her father’s thrived. Her father spoiled Tanya to compensate for her childhood. Tanya was well known for her excellence. The illegitimate daughter had become a legitimate heiress.
Ashley had thought they’d never meet again, but fate favored Tanya. She and Chase were childhood friends, but he was never into her. The first time he saw Tanya, he fell for her.
‘Ashley, are you okay?” her colleagues asked, noticing her pale face.
Tm fine.”
She and Chase would soon be divorced. Who he loved wouldn’t matter.
Ashley worked late. Around 9 pm, her phone rang-it was her best friend, Cindy, who’d had too much to drink. Ashley had to pick her up.
Twenty minutes later, Ashley arrived. As she was going in, a boy emerged from the parking lot.
Sam? Wasn’t he in LA? Had he come back with Chase? She knew Chase’s work in LA wasn’t finished. She thought this was a short trip, but even Sam returned… They must have been back for a while, yet he never called her.
Clutching her bag, she followed him. At the lobby, she saw Tanya with Chase’s friends. She hid behind plants and chairs.
“Sam, you’re back!”
“Yes, Aunt Tanya! Dad finished work early and brought me back! We came back a day before your birthday!”
This is a necklace Daddy and I made! Happy birthday, Aunt Tanya!”
Wow! You’re so sweet! Thank you, Sam!”
Tm glad you like it!”
Sam hugged Tanya.”I missed you so much! If I hadn’t called you every day, I would have died…”
“I missed you too.
Footsteps approached…
It was Chase. Ashley knew from his footsteps alone, because she’d waited for him for eight years. His gait was as steady and composed as he was. Even with his family, he remained calm, almost detached, seemingly unfazed by anything. She’d thought nothing could ruffle him. Then Tanya appeared.
Before she could dwell on the past, she heard Sam call, “Daddy!” Chase’s friends greeted him. Chase responded and said to Tanya, “Happy birthday.” Tanya smiled. “Thanks
Daddy, you have other gifts for Aunt Tanya, right? Give them to her!”
Silence fell. Then, one of Chase’s friends chuckled, pinching Sam’s cheek. “Those are private gifts. Let it go, haha!”
The others laughed meaningfully.
Chase said, ‘I already gave them to her.”
“When? Sam whined, “You went to see Aunt Tanya without me!”
They all laughed. Ashley remembered Tanya at the office that morning. That was when he gave her the gifts.
Tanya smiled. “Let’s go upstairs.”
Their footsteps faded. Ashley felt numb, a sharp pain in her chest. She finally snapped out of it, silently entered the elevator, and helped her friend downstairs. Cindy’s room was on the same floor as Chase’s party. Chase’s friend, Ethan, paused as Ashley helped Cindy into the elevator.
“What’s wrong”
I think I saw someone.”
They’d grown up with Chase and knew how much Ashley liked him. Ashley was pretty but quiet and nothing special- not Chase’s type.
They didn’t like her much either.
They rarely saw her and never greeted her. Ethan wasn’t even sure if it was Ashley.
Even if it was her, he didn’t care.
He went back to the room.
Ashley didn’t notice him. After dropping Cindy off, she stayed to care for her.
Cindy woke up and hugged Ashley, saying, “Thanks! I’m so going to buy you dinner!”
