Wake Up Leave The Liar novel Chapter 37

Chapter 14

Ashley shook her head. Tve been busy.” It was partly true. Chase didn’t bully her, he just didn’t love her. She’d been working on VR until the wee hours

for two weeks.

Yonnie scoffed. “Your job is that important? Like Sterling Corp can’t function without you?”

Chase’s mother, Lily, sipped her tea coldly, “If you can’t handle it, just quit. No one’s forcing you to stay.”

Yonnie laughed. Right! Don’t take yourself too seriously.”

Emily was about to defend Ashley, but Ashley spoke first, “I’ve submitted my resignation. I’ll leave after the handover.”

Lily and Yonnie were stunned.Emily frowned. “Ashley…”

“Mom’s here?”

Sam came downstairs. When he saw Ashley, he ran to hug her.”Mom!”

Ashley hugged him but said nothing. Emily didn’t want Ashley to leave, but seeing Sam, she changed the subject. “Ashley, I haven’t had your tea in ages. Make some for me?”

Ashley was skilled in making tea.

“Sure, but it’s almost dinner time…”

Yonnie disliked tea.”Yes, we’ll have dinner when Chase gets back…”

Chase arrived, greeted his mother and grandmother, glanced at Ashley, and sat on a single sofa away from her. Sam ran to him.”Dad!”

Chase hugged him and looked around. Jake entered, jumped over the sofa, and sat down. Seeing everyone, he said, “Were you all waiting for me?”

Yonnie patted his head. “Yes, we’re starving!”

Jake was the family’s sunshine. His mother smiled, and Emily was happy to see him, too. She asked the maids to serve dinner.

There were nine of them, so they went to a smaller dining room. Emily took the lead to sit down.

Emily smiled. “Sam, switch with your dad, so your parents can sit together.” She always tried to get them together.

Everyone was used to it. Yonnie scoffed while sitting down. Chase didn’t object.

Ashley didn’t react like before. She smiled gently at Emily.”Don’t bother, Grandma.”

Emily felt Ashley was too submissive. She should be harder.

Everyone started having dinner. Ashley was quiet and Chase didn’t talk to her. It was normal. Sam, who used to talk to Ashley, now only talked to Chase. But when he wanted shrimp, he looked at Ashley, who would usually peel shrimp for them.

‘Mom, I want shrimp.”

Ashley Answered, ‘Okay.”

As she peeled the shrimp, Emily asked, “Ashley, where’s your ring?”

Everyone looked at her hand.

Ashley never took off her wedding ring in anyone’s memory, despite the coldness of her husband. Chase never wore his. Everyone was used to it; Yonnie often mocked her for that. No one except for Emily noticed she wasn’t wearing it today.

Ashley paused, then said calmly,”I was in a rush this morning and left it at home.”

She’d taken it off when she drafted the divorce papers and put it in the envelope. She hadn’t told Emily about the divorce.
