Chapter 15

Ashley shook her head “No, what’s wrong?”

Sam, who was disappointed, said nothing. Ashley didn’t ask. After his bath, she dried his hair. He asked to play his phone.

“Okay, but just for an hour, an then you go to bed.”

“Okay.” He needed to tell Tanya about the school thing. He worried she’d be upset. While he was worrying, he pushed Ashley out.”Mom, off you go. I’ll turn off my phone at 9:30,”

He always was punctual. Ashley said goodnight and left. He locked the door.

Ashley heard it. He locked the door because of nobody but her. He probably wanted to talk to Tanya.

Sam texted Tanya: Aunt Tanya…

Ashley didn’t pry. She went to her room and took a shower.

Then, she sat down, reading until 11:30 pm. Chase hadn’t returned. He had always felt that their marriage was based on the trap she had set for him, but

in fact by the third year, his attitude towards her had improved. However, later, Tanya appeared, and he fell for her.

He hadn’t slept with her since. She didn’t know if he was coming back tonight.

She went downstairs.

A voice said, “Everyone’s asleep. Why aren’t you in your room? Is it because Ashley is there?”

It was Yonnie. Chase was smoking; she couldn’t see his face.

Yonnie continued, “I understand. I’ve met Tanya a few times. She’s 24, has a PhD from a top university, managing family business, beautiful and wild. She’s exceptional. But her background isn’t perfect. Chase, have you thought this through? You…”

Chase said, “I know what I want.”

Yonnie frowned.”I’m your sister, and you don’t seem to trust me. Fine.”

Ashley clenched her hands, her face stung by the night breeze. She left.

Yonnie then said, ‘Ashley said she’s resigning.”

Justin said she made a mistake, and I told him to fire her.”

Yonnie laughed. So that’s it. She said it like she resigned herself. I knew it! So the truth is, she got fired, haha!”

Chase didn’t respond.

Ashley almost bumped into Jake. He apologized.”Are you okay?”

Ashley nodded. Jake had always liked her. He felt Ashley was kind and patient. He hoped his future wife would be like her. Later, he learned about Chase’s attitude towards her, but he still liked her. He said sincerely, “Ashley, you’re so good. My brother will see that eventually. Don’t be sad.”

Ashley smiled. “Thank you, Jake.”

Tll get a drink. Good night.”

‘Good night.”

In her room, she turned off the lights and switched on her bedside lamp. She heard Chase’s footsteps. They made eye contact.

Ashley looked at him. Before, she would have hung up his jacket, given him his pajamas, and drawn him a bath. But this time, she didn’t move. Chase noticed her coldness. He thought she was sulking. He didn’t care why. He just said coldly, “Sam’s enrollment is done. You take him to school

tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

He went to the closet to get ready for a shower.

Ashley looked at his back, wanting to ask about the divorce papers.

She thought he would contact her when he was ready, because he was more eager to divorce than she was.

That was why she’d been waiting patiently. But he never mentioned about it. Perhaps he was too busy.

His phone rang. His voice was gentle when he answered. It was Tanya.

He said, “I’ll be there now. Then he left.

Ashley didn’t stop him. Hearing his car leave, she closed her eyes and slept.

The next morning, Ashley woke at 6:30 am to take Sam to school. Chase wasn’t there. She went to wake Sam; his door was locked. She knocked. He opened it with an unhappy face. Why are you knocking so loudly? It hurts my head!”
