Perhaps knowing Ashley didn’t want to talk to him, after she finished ordering, Chase brought up Sam. Sam has a really important competition out of state next Thursday. Do you have time that day?”
“Yeah, Mom, will you come with me to the competition that day?”
Since it’s an out-of-state trip, that’ll be at least two days round trip.
Right now, Eternal, Jexel, and Sterling Corp all have a ton of critical matters waiting for her to handle. She might not have the time.
Ashley thought it over, just about to speak. But before she could, Sam saw the look on her face and pretty much knew what she was going to say.
He’d lost count of how many times Ashley had told him she was busy with work, promising to hang out “when she had the time.”
Yet, even on weekends, even when he went to his great-grandmother’s house, even when they lived under the same roof, she barely had any time to spend with him.
Thinking about all that, Sam gripped his fork, gently scraping it against the plate in front of him. Before Ashley could speak, he lowered his head and mumbled, “The other day, when I went out of state for a practice competition, all the other kids had their parents with them, but I was all alone…”
Initially, when he found out Chase couldn’t make it, he didn’t really think much of it.
He often had the house staff go with him on trips anyway.
But then, seeing all the other kids at the competition, with their parents acting like their own personal cheerleaders, rooting for them and staying by their side the whole time… he suddenly felt a pang of loneliness.
Realizing that, he called his mom almost immediately. But his mom never picked up. Luckily, he dad answered.
Ashley heard Sam’s words. Her mouth parted slightly, utterly speechless for a moment.
Her silence meant she wasn’t going to make any promises. Sam’s nose started to tingle with emotion. He pressed her lips together, then turned his face away, refusing to look at Ashley anymore.
Before, no matter how busy she was, Ashley would always find a way to take Sam to the competition.
But now…
She had told herself she needed to let go of Sam, to emotionally detach. But seeing Sam so heartbroken like this, Ashley’s resolve melted almost instantly.
But then… but then…
She took a deep breath, looking away. After a moment, she-turned to Chase.”You don’t have time that day either?”
“After my grandma’s accident, I canceled a lot of work appointments. Next Tuesday is the deadline, I have to go to Jorvik-”
Ashley frowned, her hands clenched, deep in thought, saying nothing.
Sam’s eyes filled with tears as he watched them pass the blame around.
He tossed his fork onto the table, turning to glare at them.”Since you’re both so busy, then neither of you needs to go! I’ll go by myself?”
With that, he spun around and bolted out of the private room.
Honestly, Ashley had almost never seen Sam this angry in all his life.
Ashley just stared, completely stunned.
When she snapped out of it, she instinctively chased after him.
But Chase was a step faster.
Before Sam could even touch the doorknob of the private room, he covered the distance in a few strides, bent down, and scooped him up.
