Wake Up Leave The Liar novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Noah set down the box in his hands and walked over. “Don’t panic. Look again. Did you check everywhere?”

Lila mumbled, eyes flicking toward me in the living room. “I… I did. It’s just… the only place left is Dr. Carter’s room…”

That did it.

I slammed my pen down and stood, my voice cold. “Lila, what are you implying? That I stole your pendant?”

Lila flinched, tears spilling faster. “Dr. Carter, I didn’t mean it like that! It’s just… that pendant means everything to me. It’s all I have left from my grandma… Her voice cracked, sobs shaking her shoulders.

Noah’s gaze softened instantly. He pulled her behind him, protective. “Ella, she didn’t mean it. She’s just upset. If that’s the only room left, just let her check. What’s the big deal?”

I froze. Humiliation scorched through me.

He could fall for someone else-fine.

But after twenty years together, did he really think I’d steal from an intern?

I bit my lip, refusing to yield. “This is my room. I said I didn’t take it, and I didn’t. Why should I let her search it?”

His brows drew tight. “If you’re innocent, why make such a scene? Let her look, clear it up.”

And then-he actually shoved me.

Caught off guard, I stumbled and hit the floor hard. Pain flared through my scraped palm.

Noah!” I shouted, stunned and furious.

But he’d already thrown my door open. “Go ahead, check.”

Lila hesitated only a second before rushing inside.

And in less than a minute, she reached under my pillow-and pulled out her pendant.

The red cord was snapped. The jade cracked down the middle.

Dr. Carter… it was you!” she sobbed, clutching the broken pendant. “You’ve always been so kind. I would’ve given you anything! But this-this was my grandma’s heirloom! How could you?”

I stared in disbelief. That’s ridiculous! I never touched your stuff! You planted it there to frame me!”

Noah’s face twisted in rage. He pulled the trembling Lila closer, shielding her. His voice cut like ice. “Ella! You stole her keepsake, broke it, and now you’re blaming her? When did you become so-so out of line?!”

“Out of line?” My laugh was bitter, broken. “Noah, can’t you see what’s happening? Why would I steal from her? What could I possibly gain from this?”
