Chapter 38
She was surprised Chase wasn’t talking to Burke.
She whispered, “Did you have a falling out with Mr. Burke?”
Chase smiled. “No.”
“Then why…” It was a rare opportunity. Why wasn’t he talking to Burke? She considered switching seats, but Burke was chatting with an influential executive. She was a junior, and interrupting them might offend the executive.
He doesn’t like me.”
“What?” Tanya was stunned. Seeing Chase’s smile, she realized she’d heard correctly. But wasn’t this a falling out? Chase seemed unconcerned. He didn’t explain further; Tanya didn’t press him.
The conference ended. Word spread that Burke wouldn’t leave immediately. Many rushed to the front row. But when those in the back rows reached the front, Burke was already surrounded. Tanya still didn’t get a chance to talk to Burke. Yonnie gestured to her.
Tanya said before Yonnie could speak, “Mr. Burke is surrounded by important people. I could barely get a word in edgewise. Chase said we could talk to
him next time.”
Right… Yonnie realized she’d been impatient. She pushed Tanya to return to Chase’s group.
Tanya calmly said, “I already know those people.” Because of Chase, they were polite to her. Yonnie finally smiled. “That’s good.”
After chatting briefly, Tanya returned to Chase. It was hard, but everyone knew she was Chase’s companion and made way for her. Some executives, having spoken to Burke, gathered to discuss business.
Seeing Tanya standing beside Chase, someone said amiably, “Miss Mond is talented and beautiful. Mr. Sterling, you’re really lucky.”
They didn’t judge solely on background. Tanya’s qualifications, beauty, elegance, and calm demeanor made her impressive. They were sincere in their praise.
Chase smiled; Tanya said, Thank you.”
They chatted pleasantly. Burke, however, said he had to leave. No one dared to stop him; he was too influential.
Burke left. Meanwhile, Ashley and her colleagues were engaged in discussions. They didn’t approach Burke; they didn’t need to. Soon, Tim received a message and took Ashley to meet Burke outside the exhibition hall.
Burke was texting. Seeing them, he looked up. Ashley hesitated.”Professor…”
Burke snorted. “Hmm.” He said coldly, ‘I saw your exhibits. They’re acceptable… but,” his gaze swept over them.”After three years, this is all you got?” Tim and Ashley were shocked.
Tim said quickly, “We’re working on new products; prototypes should be ready next year.”
Hmm. Burke said coldly.”Don’t come see me until then.”
Ashley and Tim looked like schoolchildren who had done something wrong.”Yes…”
Burke added, “Send me your observations tonight.” They understood he meant a technical summary of the exhibits.
Yes…
Tim said quickly, Professor Burke, one night… is difficult.” It was very difficult.”How about… a month?” He estimated it would take tens of thousands of words. One night was impossible.
Burke said nothing, looking at them. Tim felt his intense gaze and then said, “One night it is!”
Ashley was speechless.
The conversation ended. Burke looked at Ashley. Ashley straightened.”Professor…”
What an awful choice!” He glanced at her coldly and left.
Ashley was stunned. Tim said, “He’s talking about your husband.”
Ashley understood. “Did they say anything to Mr. Burke?” She’d seen Chase and Tanya greet Burke in the main hall, but she didn’t hear their
conversation.
Tim shook his head. “No idea.”
They’d been engrossed in their conversation. They didn’t know that Tanya and Yonnie had come out and seen them talking to Burke.
Seeing Burke leave, Yonnie said to Tanya, “It’s okay. She’s not as talented as you. Even if she met Burke, it won’t help her.”
Tanya smiled.”I know. Let’s go.”
Ashley and Tim weren’t leaving; it was a good opportunity to network.
After Burke left, they returned to the hall. They saw Chase, but didn’t speak to him; he didn’t approach them either.
