Chapter 45
“Betty.” Zark took the girl from Ashley’s arms. He noticed she was soaked. He looked at Ashley with confusion. “This is…”
Ashley hadn’t expected the girl was his niece. She explained, “She fell into the pool. I got her out.”
Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Ashley said.”Change her clothes; she might catch a cold.”
Zark nodded, wanting to say something, but his niece was crying, seemingly scared. He comforted her, nodded at Ashley, and took her into the elevator.
Ashley returned to the hot spring. After showering and changing, she went to the buffet. Before she finished eating, Zark and his niece appeared.
“Can we sit here?”
Ashley didn’t want much interaction with him, but she nodded. Please.”
“Betty, stay here. I’ll get you something to eat.”
Betty looked at Ashley timidly, nodding.”Okay…”
Zark said to Ashley, Watch her for me.” Ashley agreed.
Only Ashley and Betty remained. Betty was shy; Ashley didn’t want to scare her. Unsure of Betty’s dietary needs, she didn’t offer her food. She said gently, “Your uncle will be back soon.”
Betty looked at her, nodding after a while.
Did the water get in your nose? Does it still hurt?”
Betty shook her head. Zark returned, placing a plate in front of Betty and giving her cutlery. She ate quietly.
Zark asked, “Is it good?”
Betty nodded. Zark looked at Ashley, then said to Betty, This beautiful aunt saved you. Thank her.”
Betty looked at Ashley and softly said, Thank you, Auntie.”
Ashley said warmly, “You’re welcome.”
Betty looked at Zark. Zark said, “Alright, keep eating.”
She continued eating.
Zark turned his attention to Ashley.”Are you here alone?”
Ashley shook her head.”Company outing. I’m with colleagues.”
Zark didn’t know she’d left Sterling Corp. He thought it was a Sterling Corp outing. He nodded, “I see.”
Tim noticed Ashley and waved. Ashley wanted less interaction with Chase’s circle and had nothing to say to Zark, so she waved back at Tim and said to Zark, I have to go. Enjoy your meal.
Zark sensed her discomfort and her coldness. He assumed it was because of their previous unpleasant encounter. He nodded, not pressing her.
Tim looked at Zark, asking Ashley, “Who was that?” He’d seen a tall man with a child. He assumed they were strangers, but Ashley seemed to know him.
‘Zark Green.”
“Him? Tim was surprised. “I thought you two were not friends. Why were you sitting together?”
“His niece fell into the pool; I rescued her. He came to thank me.”
Tim understood.
Zark didn’t see the person Ashley spoke to, assuming it was her colleague.
After they left, Zark saw Tim’s back; the man was tall, and he seemed close to Ashley.
Uncle… Betty called him. Zark snapped back. Finished? Let’s go upstairs.”
‘Yes.’
Zark, who had already eaten, left with Betty.
Ashley was about to read on the balcony when her phone rang. It was Chase. He only contacted her when he needed something.
She answered coldly, “Hello.”
